March Edition
Reminders for Jackson Families
- Breakfast begins at 8:15. Students get dropped off on the playground.
- Students should not be dropped off prior to 8:25, unless they are coming for breakfast.
- School ends at 3:40. Pick up your children in the designated areas at this time.
- All students need to wear a jacket for recess if the "feels like" temperature is under 50 degrees. Jackets are to be worn around their waists if they bring them outside and it's warmer than 50 degrees.
- Thank you to our amazing Jackson PTO for organizing and sponsoring school and family events this past week during our No Electronics Week.
- We also celebrated Read Across America Week last week. Our Library Media Manager, Mrs. Brick, Reading Teacher, Mrs. Buck, and Facilitator, Mr. Sleger helped to organize daily events during the school day to celebrate reading. Thank you!
Forward State Testing
Jackson students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the State Forward Test April 2, 3, 4th and April 8th. Please try to schedule appointments outside of these dates. If at all possible, try to avoid pulling your child out of school during the scheduled testing dates. Teacher will be working hard the week of March 24th to prepare all students for state testing. Most students will test first thing in the morning from 9:00-10:30. Our 4th graders have Social Studies and Science assessments in the afternoon from 1:00-2:30.
What can you do to help prepare your child for state testing?
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep.
- Provide your child with a healthy breakfast. Snacks will be provided for students at school.
- Avoid pulling your child out of school the week of March 24th-April 8th.
- Talk to your child about the importance of taking their time and doing their best.
Homework Club
We are not going to be able to offer Homework Club at Jackson starting 4th quarter. The last day of Homework Club will be March 28th. We are hoping to find a way to put Homework Club into place next school year. Sorry about any inconveniences. Reach out to Mrs. DeRosier if you have questions 920-663-9522.
Summer School
We are so excited to share that Summer School will be held at Jackson Elementary this year. In order to prepare, we would appreciate if you could fill out the below form to let us know if you think your student(s) will attend. Summer school is running for 3 weeks this summer, June 23-27 and July 7-18. Times will be from 8 AM - 12 PM each week day. We have some fun themes planned and possibility of a few field trips as well. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to students daily. Please, click on the below button to take our survey - so we can better plan and staff our school. This survey only gives us an estimate of how many students will be attending. Families will need to complete an actual registration for Summer School in April.
Family Math Night - March 18th
We are so excited to be having our Math Madness night, here at Jackson, on Tuesday, March 18th! Please be sure to send in your child's permission/sign-up form as soon as possible to help us in being prepared for the best night of math ever!
When you come, please enter through the gym doors and remember that adults must stay with their child during this event. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing everyone on March 18th!
Literacy with Mr. Sleger
We are quickly approaching the end of the third quarter of school already! We are at that point in the year when now our days are getting longer and the weather is getting nicer. With that being said, homework can tend to get pushed to the side. The Manitowoc Public School District is continuing our expectation that students read for 20 minutes Mondays through Thursdays. How can you help? All students have a reading baggie including book(s) and a gold sheet for the week called Read and Respond. After your child has read for 20 minutes, either independently or to you, please sign off to verify. One of the biggest areas we work on in our SFA writing is responding in complete sentences and retelling what we just read. These are great tasks to practice at home.
Roots Readers (first grade level)
If your child is reading at a first-grade level, the books that are sent home are called Shared Stories and they come from the SFA program. These books have been practiced at school and are going home to be reread so your child can build their fluency skills. Please know you can also read other books from your home to match your child’s interest. How can you help if your child is stuck on a word? Try having them sound it out by blending the letter sounds. Try chunking it, which means breaking a long word into its parts. You can also encourage your child to read on as sometimes completing the sentence and circling back helps.
Wings Readers (second-fifth+ grade level)
If your child is in a second through fifth+ grade reading level, there will be some additional areas on the sheet your child will independently complete. Children rate what they have read and also write a brief summary. It is also worth noting that students reading at this level do not have homework books assigned by the SFA program. Instead, your child is choosing an interesting book from the school library, classroom, or reading materials from your home. Encourage your child to select material that is not too easy nor too difficult.
On April 7th, students will be placed in their new fourth quarter SFA rooms. Placement letters will be sent home with your child that night. Please be on the lookout for them.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s reading success! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

March Standard Response Protocol Drill-LOCKDOWN
Jackson Families/Guardians:
School safety is critical to high quality learning and the Manitowoc Public School District utilizes the K12 Standard Response Protocol (SRP/SRM) to provide a consistent safety response at all schools. The SRP provides five safety response protocols. Those five responses are SECURE - LOCKDOWN - EVACUATE - SHELTER - HOLD. The SRP provides for a standard response that is shared and trained with students, staff, visitors and with our first responders from the Fire and Police Departments.
“A uniform, planned, and practiced response to any incident is the foundation of a safe school. The SRP is action-based, flexible, and easy to learn. It rationally organizes tactics for response to weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety.” iloveuguys.org
Each month throughout the school year, all Manitowoc Public Schools will train on one of the five responses. The training is designed to create knowledge, answer questions, and build familiarity for all students, staff and visitors. This month (March) we will conduct an unannounced LOCKDOWN on our campus. A LOCKDOWN is utilized when there is a threat or hazard inside of the school building.
It will be clear to all students, staff and visitors that this is a training/practice of a LOCKDOWN. During practice our staff will have the opportunity to talk with students about the why, how and answer questions from students. We will walk through the steps of a LOCKDOWN from beginning to end to grow our knowledge and deepen our understanding so we are ready should we ever need to utilize this safety measure.
Please take time each month to ask your child what safety response protocol they practiced and see if they have questions or ideas about how these safety steps work and how they could be used in other places beyond school. The SRP can be utilized in many places for more information please see iloveuguys.org.
Should you have questions you can reach me at 920-663-9522 or derosierj@mpsd.school.
Thank you

Youth Art Month
March is Youth Art Month. To celebrate the fine arts in our public schools, the MPSD is once again collaborating with the Rahr West Art Museum to bring “Youth Art Series” to our community!
