Community Prayer
From 12-16 August, schools and communities will come together to mark the first Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, aimed at preventing and addressing bullying. The goal is to promote inclusion, respect and belonging so that everyone feels like they have a place.
Thank-you to Miss Sloan for sharing this prayer and photo.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Catholic Identity Pillar
Mary Mackillop Liturgy
Thank-you to the Mantilla Rodriguez family and Mrs Alp for attending the Mary Mackillop Liturgy at St Mary’s Cathedral last week. A spectacular light show followed the Liturgy, illuminating the cathedral with images of our Australian Saint who worked so hard to provide free education to children.
Assumption Mass
The Assumption represents a tremendous opportunity to draw closer to God through Mary’s example. Thank-you to Father CJ for celebrating Mass on the Feast of the Assumption at Orana yesterday. Thank you also to Mrs Alp, Ms Mouttet, Ms Draper, Mr DiCarlantonio, the choir, the servers and musicians for preparing and participating in the prayerful celebration.
Confirmation Retreat and Parent Child Workshop
The Year 6 students continue their preparation for Confirmation. The retreat day run by 24/7 Youth Ministry provided an excellent learning experience for our candidates. This was followed by the parent/child workshop. Please pray for our Confirmation candidates.
Education Pillar
Catholic Performing Arts Festival
This week, I had the pleasure of attending the concert band on Monday evening and the liturgical choir section on Tuesday. The band was tremendous; once again wowing the audience with their talent, particularly on the very difficult final piece. The choir’s harmonies and dynamics brought genuine joy to the audience. Congratulations to our music students. Thank-you to Ms Sarah Draper for her dedication to our music students and to the parents for their support.
Science Week
This week is Science Week. The 2024 school theme is Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability. To quote Mrs Hogan, "Science Week is every Week!" At Orana, we are celebrating Science Week over a fortnight with engaging activities to promote learning, linking with our sustainability focus as an Earth School. Stay tuned for next week's edition of The Week that Was.
Stem Showcase
Congratulations to the senior STEM students who participated in the STEM Showcase at Chisholm College last week. Students had the opportunity to showcase their projects with students from other Catholic schools. Thank-you to Mrs Hogan for organising this experience.

P and F - Volunteers Needed
Please support our P and F Executive Team. This small group of 5 parents are committed to nurturing the spirit of the Orana community. They need your support to continue to provide the community building events scheduled for this year. We have just over 300 families in our school; please consider small ways that you could contribute to ensure that fantastic events like Father’s Day Breakfast, the Disco and possibly a Colour Run can go ahead. Staffing News
Mrs Packer has informed me that she will be resigning at the end of this year. She has served the Orana school community and Catholic education over the last 25 years. Lynda is an excellent teacher, who has always given time to initiatives beyond her classroom responsibilities. She will be greatly missed and we wish her all the best.
Miss Salem has also informed me that she will be resigning at the end of the year to travel. Tori has worked at Orana for 2 years and has proved to be an amazing graduate teacher, with a passion for Early Childhood Education. We wish her all the best for her exciting venture.
We look forward to seeing you at the Senior Community Mass next weekend, on Saturday 24th August at 5.30pm. We will celebrate our fathers during this Mass. This is also the commitment Mass for our Year 3 children who are celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Term 4. Please come along.
God bless and take care.
Kind regards,
Dee Johnston
Baby News
Congratulations to Bonnie Lynch on the arrival of her second daughter Elsie. We wish the Lynch family all the very best.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is a series of common literacy and numeracy tests conducted across Australia for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students. Last year saw the change to NAPLAN being reported against proficiency standards instead of a numerical band. Year 3 results are above CEWA and state averages in all areas, with reading below the CEWA average. Reading and grammar are slightly below the national average. Year 5 results are above CEWA and state averages in writing, spelling and grammar, with grammar slightly below the national average. The numeracy and reading averages are below CEWA, state and national averages. The school uses these results as one data source, along with many other forms of assessments, to plan for the whole school curriculum, teaching and learning. Results for each learning area are listed in these tables.

Angelico Art Exhibition 2024
For the first time, Orana has entered artwork to be displayed at the Angelico Art Exhibition. We have 19 students whose artworks will be on display at Forrest Centre (221 St George's Terrace, Perth). The exhibition will run from August 5th to August 23rd and will be open from 9am-5pm weekdays with a special viewing session on Saturday, August 17th from 1:30pm-3pm. We congratulate the selected students on this wonderful achievement.
Book Week 2024
Next week we are celebrating Book Week. Children will engage in activities based on Notable Australian children’s books of 2024.
On Thursday, August 22, we will have our Book Parade in the School Hall @ 9am. Children are encouraged to dress up as a book character and bring along the book too. When children dress up as characters from their favourite books, it not only brings those stories to life but also ignites a spark of curiosity and interest in reading. As they engage with the characters and their stories, children are more likely to develop a genuine love for reading that can last a lifetime. As the theme for this year’s Book Week so eloquently says “Reading is Magic”! 🪄
If you have any questions, please contact your classroom teacher.
CAPSS
On Tuesday, August 6th, the Year 6 students competed against five other schools at the CAPSS Modcrosse and Leaguetag (ML) carnival. Four teams in total represented our school across two divisions at Morris Buzacott Reserve. The carnival highlighted the importance of healthy competition, running, catching, throwing, and simply giving sports a go. I want to thank all the Year 6 students who competed graciously and represented Orana by upholding our school values. Students practised and prepared during Senior Sport and Class Sport time, and their skills were on full display on the day with some agile tries and powerful goals.
Thank you to the staff who assisted on the day and to the parents who came to show their support. Thank you also to Mr Rijs for coordinating a successful carnival and organising the fabulous referees from WARL and East Fremantle Lacrosse Club.

Transitions For Children
Key points
• It can be hard for children to move from one activity to another, especially if they’re enjoying something and don’t want to stop.
• Routines can help with transitions that happen every day. Children can accept change better when they know it’s coming.
• It also helps to give children enough warning, allowing time for transitions, offer choices and resist bad behaviour.
What are transitions:
Transitions happen when your child has to stop doing one activity and start doing something else. Examples of transitions include;
• Getting ready to leave the house
• Putting away toys before bedtime
• Turning off the television or computer
• Getting out of the bath
Your child probably needs to make transitions’ many times a day. But transitions can be hard, especially if your child is happy with what she’s doing and doesn’t want to stop.
Kind regards
Kath Warburton
