HUBER STREET SCHOOL
FEBRUARY 2025

Hello Bears,
Winter Break will be here before you know it! We have had an exciting few months, and there is still so much to look forward to!
Kindergarten and 1st grade students, get ready for our upcoming MVP Dance! It’s a wonderful evening where they get to dance with their Most Valuable Person and their classmates. Everyone is sure to have a blast!
On February 12th, we’ll be celebrating our 100th day of school —what a milestone! Our students have been working hard and reaching new heights, and this will be a fun way to reflect on all they've accomplished so far. On February 25th, we will be celebrating PTA Founders Day. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn more about how we can continue to support our school community and our students’ success.
Lastly, with so many students not feeling well lately, we do ask that if your child isn't feeling well, please do not send them to school if you believe that they are sick.
Wishing you all a relaxing winter break. Let’s finish the year strong and come back ready for even more exciting adventures!
Sincerely,
Mr. Valente
~PS- May the Force Be With You!

ST. JUDE MATH-A-THON
The Secaucus Elementary Schools are joining forces for a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Math-A-Thon fundraiser. The fundraiser begins on Monday, February 3, 2025, and will end on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Each student will receive a math booklet that they can complete at home for the duration of our fundraiser. Family and friends can sponsor your child’s participation and encourage them to complete their Math-A-Thon booklets.
While involvement is voluntary, we strongly encourage your child to help in the fight against childhood cancer. The Secaucus Public School District has donated $570,854.89 over the past decade to St. Jude Research Hospital. Donations collected throughout the years have helped fund the lifesaving research and treatment.
At St. Jude Research Hospital, families never receive a bill for treatment.
The treatments invented at St. Jude helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% in 1962 to more than 80% today.
Please scan the QR code or click the link below to register. We encourage you to share your personal fundraising page with your family and friends from Monday, February 3rd until Friday, February 28th,

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE
Students from Huber Street School embarked upon a shared journey full of hard work, determination and the opportunity to make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. This journey is the Scripps National Spelling Bee!
The Scripps National Spelling Bee, is one of the nation's oldest and most iconic competitions, beginning in 1925! The purpose of the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee is not only to help students improve their spelling, but also to increase their vocabulary, improve writing skills, public speaking, articulation, poise, and develop correct English usage that will help them throughout their lives.
Dedicated students have prepared for the event by studying over 450 words and definitions. The word range extends to eighth grade level words. Additionally, some students studied another 1,150 words derived from Latin, Arabic, French, German, Dutch, Old English, Japanese, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Asian, Slavic and New World Languages within the Merriam Webster Spell It Booklet.
Our challenging spelling bee test and spelling rounds were held during the month of January. Students were administered a qualifying spelling test and the top 35 finalists moved on to the in person spelling bee.
After 38 rigorous rounds, and a competition total of 488 words, Vidhan Dangol earned the top spot as the 2025 Huber Street School Champion by successfully spelling the word sabbath! Other words spelled correctly during the competition included louis d’or, chlorofluorocarbon, Tlingit and klystron.
Our Spelling Bee Champion will continue his journey and will compete on February 8, 2025 at The Hudson County Spelling Bee at High Tech High School.

1st Trimester Honor Roll
Congratulations to our 4th and 5th graders for earning their way onto the Honor Roll.
3rd Grade: When In Rome!
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. The Third Grade classes completed Unit 4 for the CKLA Amplify program. The students were invited to dress as Roman civilians, gods/goddesses, or characters they learned about throughout the Unit. Students enjoyed a snack based on Roman cuisine.
Pre-K: Letter "F" Week
Mrs. Rivera’s classes are having fun finger painting in foam for letter F week.
Pre-K: Winter Lessons
Mrs. Leppin’s classes are starting off 2025 learning and playing in a winter wonderland! Our friends are writing their names on snowmen, creating “melted snowmen” and having indoor snowball fights.
5th Grade: Because of Mr. Terupt
After reading the novel Because of Mr. Terupt, students in Mrs. Puerari & Miss Newcombe's class learned the importance of a helmet along with the process that goes into making and designing one. Students then constructed their own helmets using cardboard boxes and other materials. Students tested the helmets by completing exercises such as jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, and sprints.

The Great Kindness Challenge
Celebrating our Students' Kindness! Small acts of kindness make a big difference in our school community. Encouraging kindness at home reinforces these wonderful habits. Ask your child about a kind act they did today - it's amazing how even the smallest gestures can brighten someone's day! In February, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day. Students will be encouraged to complete the Acts of Kindness board at home and school. Completed boards will be sent to the office and random raffle winners will be chosen.
PTA PRESS
On Tuesday, February 25th, the Huber Street School Parent Teacher Association will be celebrating the annual Founders Day Meeting in our gymnasium. Please join us as we celebrate together.
The highlight will be when our 1st graders perform songs in sign language for our audience! We hope to see you there.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Art Fundraiser
Hi Parents & Guardians of Huber St. School!
I am Michelle Mandaglio, your child’s Art Teacher. I am hosting a second annual
Art Fundraiser this year! You have the option to get your child’s artwork put
onto keepsakes such as mugs, pillows, bags, etc. The order form with all
keepsake options are listed in this packet.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support of your child’s creativity and love for art
making.
Please contact Ms. Mandaglio if you have any questions at mmandaglio@sboe.org
If your child chooses to make their own art, please only use 8.5” x 11” paper and do not use any copyright images or logos in the picture. It is important that if you have more than one artwork in
the order folder, to label which artwork goes with which object purchase.
The company I am working with is called Kids Kreations - their website is https://kidskreations.us/. You can also visit your child’s Art Class Google Classroom for more information. All proceeds will greatly benefit our school. If you wish to participate in this fundraiser, please fill out the order form. Inside this folder, please include the order form, payment, and the artwork. Please make checks payable to “Secaucus Activity Fund” or give exact cash. Have your child give the folder to me in the art
room or give it to their homeroom teacher.
All orders are due by Friday, March 21st. When the shipment of the orders arrive at
school, I will hand them out to the students to take home. Please expect to receive
the order about 4 weeks after the due date.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PICK-UP
The end of the day is a very hectic time when teachers are ensuring that each student is connected with a caregiver. We respectfully ask that you do not change your student’s pick up routine on a day-to-day basis. Understandably, emergencies and last minute changes do arise, but for safety reasons we ask that you help us to keep our dismissal procedures consistent for both our staff and students.
If you need to pick up your student early for an appointment, or special reason, they must be picked up before 9th period which begins at 2:15 pm (12:00pm on one-session days.) Last period often includes special area classes and time set aside for wrapping up activities and packing up for the day which makes it difficult for our security staff to continue to monitor the building if they are also being asked to locate and get students early from their classes.
If you wish your student to be picked up by a person not on your pick-up list, you must send a note in with them in the morning, or an email to your child's homeroom teachers, in addition to Kim Pascarello (kpascarello@sboe.org) and Coleen Mason (cmason@sboe.org) in the main office.
Please make sure to state the person’s name, relationship to your student and a contact phone number for the person.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH
The federal government's universal free lunch program expired and our schools will return to offering free and reduced school lunch to only students who qualify based on family income. Families are encouraged to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch application if they believe they qualify.
As in previous years, if you would like to purchase lunch, please replenish your child's lunch account by logging into the Payforit.net (https://www.payforit.net/Login.aspx) website.
Huber Street School and Clarendon School will be serving a more traditional and expanded lunch menu. Please be reminded that students will need to input their Student ID number when purchasing items from the cafeteria (as no cash will be accepted.)
