2023-24 School Year Scheduling
Hello Horning Families,
The information below is an update from Horning’s School Counselors regarding scheduling for the 23-24 school year and where we are in the process thus far:
Last week January 23-27 all grade levels were given a presentation by Horning counselors. The presentation gave information around core and elective courses for the next school year. Students were given time to begin working on their course selection sheets and were walked through this process. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the presentation and when filling out the sheet. The goal that was communicated to the students was to take home the sheet and discuss it further with parents/guardians ( parent/guardian signatures are also required.) All students were expected to bring the sheets back to school on Tuesday, January 31st. If you have not seen this sheet yet please feel free to ask your child and/or Ms. Ramirez or Mrs. Jackson. The sheets are needed no later than Friday, February 3rd for course entry into Infinite Campus. Presentations are posted on Horning’s website, please feel free to view them if you have further questions.

Library News
Important Libray Information
Middle school students may keep library books for three weeks. Books checked out for class may be checked out longer. Throughout the year, overdue notices are emailed to students and families. Library books and language arts novels are included on that overdue list. Please encourage your student to return any overdue books.
Email Communication
As shared in Fall, the School District of Waukesha sends an email communication to the parent/guardian with information about checked out material. This communication is sent daily until the materials are returned to the library. As part of the student registration process families were notified of the communication and provided with the option to opt out of the communication. At any time, parents/guardians of students up to 8th grade can change their opt out status, by using this link.
New this winter, parents/guardians of students in grades 9-11 can opt in and receive a daily communication regarding what books their child has checked out. Have your students identification number and use this link to start getting daily notifications!
Below are a few questions to ask the student about what they are reading:
Tell me about the main character/favorite character in the book you are reading.
What genre is your book and why did you choose that book?
What is the process you take when selecting library materials?
Book Preferences Noted
Parents/Guardians can contact the Library Media Specialist to discuss topics of concern they wish to be noted in our Library system, Destiny. For example, if a child is triggered by ghosts, a note can be made in Destiny that alerts the person checking out the book to the student. For this example a note may say, “Parents request no books on ghosts.” This note will be seen when a child is checking out any physical material. Again, please be sure to opt in to the email communication to monitor what materials are being checked out by your student.
Library staff work with teachers to offer age-appropriate content to all students in the library. However, if a parent/guardian has concerns with the age appropriate content their student has access to, they should contact the school librarian to make note of this in the library system.
We look forward to engaging all readers. Our Library Media Specialist is Josh Rageth, and he can be contacted via email at jrageth@waukesha.k12.wi.us and by phone by 262-970-1358.
Student Council Information
Student Council meets in the library (or cafeteria) from 2:45-3:30. We meet every other Tuesday throughout the year. Applications were due on September 23rd. Students will receive an acceptance notification the week of September 26th-30th. Throughout the year, the Student Council plans and implements events such as dances, spirit days, community service, fundraisers and so much more. We are always looking for new ideas and new hands to help make our school a better place to be! Due to the large number of applicants, we may move our meeting location to the cafeteria and exit out of the cafeteria doors (Door 8.) This meeting location may change based on student participation. We will keep you informed.
We are super excited to be working with your children this school year!!

School District of Waukesha Annual Asbestos Notification: October 2022
As a result of the federal law AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) all primary and secondary schools are required to develop and implement a plan for managing all building materials which contain asbestos. Included in the AHERA Act is the requirement to notify all parents, guardians and staff members, as well as organizations representing them, of activities and events with the asbestos containing building materials annually as
well as make them aware of the availability of the districts asbestos management plan.
Asbestos has been used in many building materials due to its outstanding insulating and strengthening properties. When it is undisturbed or intact, it poses little hazard to human health. It is only when damage has or may occur that the quality of the school’s management program becomes an issue.
In 1988, all buildings owned, leased, or “under the control of” the School District of Waukesha were inspected by EPA accredited inspectors, with building material samples analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on the inspection, the School District of Waukesha prepared and the state approved a comprehensive management plan for administering the asbestos located within its buildings, safely and responsibly.
Once every three years, certified inspectors must re-inspect remaining materials. In addition, the rule requires a periodic walk-through (called “surveillance”) in each area containing asbestos every six months.
Short-term workers (outside contractors e.g. telephone repair workers, electricians, etc.) must be provided information regarding the location of asbestos in which they may come into contact. All short-term workers shall contact the lead maintenance person before commencing work.
The School District of Waukesha has a list of the location(s) and type(s) of asbestos containing materials found in the building and a description and timetable for their proper management. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for review in the school office. Copies are available at twenty-five (25) cents per page. Our goal is to be in full compliance with AHERA. It is our policy to maintain a safe and healthful environment for our students and our staff members. This shall be accomplished by strict enforcement of the policies regarding asbestos by the asbestos manager and the school officials.
The School District of Waukesha also requires that all new building materials introduced into the School District of Waukesha are free from asbestos. For all new buildings/additions, the architect responsible for the design certifies that to the best of their knowledge, no asbestos containing materials are used. If new buildings are acquired, they too will be inspected.
Within the last year, the School District of Waukesha has completed a 6-Month Asbestos Surveillance of remaining materials. Asbestos removal has been conducted in cooperation with the on-going construction activities at:
Bethesda Elementary School
Hadfield Elementary School
Heyer Elementary School
Rose Glen Elementary School
Saratoga STEM
North High School
South High School
