Dear Families,
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Starting next week, 6th-11th grade students at Peak Prep will participate in MAP testing. Our 1st assessment window will begin on September 6th and conclude on September 16th. Below, you will find information about MAP testing and how we will be using the results in the classroom.
What is MAP Testing (Grades 6-11)?
MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.
MAP Growth tests are unique, and it adapts to your child's responses to measure your child's skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.
Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child's learning, it's easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics and then plan instruction accordingly.
MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, and subject and have the same starting performance level. Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.
We are genuinely excited to focus on your child's individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit. Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your student's learning! I look forward to sharing information with you throughout the year. If you have any questions about MAP testing, please do not hesitate to contact me.
As always, please feel free to contact me at any time if you have a question or concern. If you would like to request a virtual meeting, please click the link at the bottom of my signature line.

Edgenuity Alert for 9/7- You do have school!
You may notice that on September 7th, the system will show that there is nothing due. That is because I created a fake holiday to allow you to focus on MAP testing without getting off track in your courses. You do have school on September 7th and are expected to log in and complete work.
While MAP testing should take no more than 2 hours to complete, you have been given about 6 hours' worth of time off in Edgenuity (or 3x the amount of time it should take to complete your reading and math MAP tests). Would you please use the extra 4 hours to catch up or move ahead in your courses?
Thank you,
Mrs. Ciolino
TO HELP PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR TESTING, ENCOURAGE THEM TO:
- Get a good night's sleep and eat a full breakfast on the day of the assessment.
- Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
- Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will only get about half of the questions correct.
- Use paper and pencil to show work for math questions
Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)
On November 15, 2021, President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law, which established the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP provides eligible households up to $30 a month, or $75 a month for households living on tribal lands, toward their internet bills, as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet.
Eligibility
All households with a child who was approved to receive free or reduced-price school meals under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or the School Breakfast Program (SBP), within the last 12 months, including children who attend schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision, are eligible for ACP benefits. Households are also eligible if a member of a household participates in certain federal benefit programs—including, among others, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, Medicaid, and Federal Public Housing Assistance.
How Families Apply
Households may apply for the ACP via The White House Get Internet web page or can call 877-384-2575. NSLP and SBP households applying directly through the ACP website may need to show documentation proving their current participation in the NSLP and SBP if their eligibility cannot be confirmed with other personally identifying information. This may include presenting the household’s school meals approval letter or other current official documentation.

REPORTING ABSENCES
Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Too many absences not only can affect achievement for the absent student but also can disrupt learning.
If your student will be absent for any reason please let your Homeroom teacher know ASAP!
Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, and Cheating
All work submitted is to be completed ONLY by students. Students are responsible for observing the standards on plagiarism, cheating, and properly crediting all sources used during the composition of work. Failure to abide by these standards is reported to the appropriate administrative authorities. It may result in a conference with the parent, loss of credit for high school courses, revoked access to course(s), and suspension or expulsion from the school.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is defined as the act(s) of copying another writer's words, ideas, images, sounds, signs/symbols, and thoughts and presenting them as your own.
Cheating
Cheating involves the act(s) of using, accepting, or distributing test answers, answer keys, or presenting another person's work as your own. Any student found cheating is in violation of the school's Academic Integrity policy.
CONSEQUENCES FOR CHEATING/PLAGIARISM
The First Offense:
The student receives no credit for the assignment
The teacher fills out a "Notice of Cheating Offense" form, makes three copies, and keeps the original for their file. The teacher distributes the copies to:
Parent/Guardian (by mail)
Counselor
Principal
If the teacher deems the assignment to be a major assignment and the offense requires premeditation (e.g., submitting a major paper that has been plagiarized), the student forfeits double the value of the assignment.
At the teacher's option, the student is given an additional assignment such as writing a statement about the incident, which the teacher keeps on file.
If the teacher, counselor, or principal deems the offense to be a major offense (e.g., stealing test or quiz materials, changing a grade in a teacher's record), the student may be suspended on the first offense.
Second Offense
- The consequences listed above in the "First Offense" shall be applied.
- Student, teacher, and parent meet with the student's counselor and/or principal to discuss causes and appropriate consequences.
- Since AP and Honors courses are more rigorous, if the student's second offense occurred in an AP or Honors course, the student may be removed from the course and placed in a regular college prep course.
Free Bus Rides for Kids Coming Soon to Ventura County!
Ventura County students will soon have a new way to get around that won’t cost them a dime.
Starting September 1, the Ventura County Transportation Commission will launch a program that lets students ride the bus at no charge. In addition to taking the bus to and from school, students will be able to get free bus rides anywhere else they need to go for any reason.
Bus drivers will allow anyone who looks 18 or younger to board for free, but older students should be prepared to show a school ID. All public bus systems throughout the county will be participating and you can learn more at this link.

High-Speed Internet-Ventura County Residents
High-speed internet has become a necessity of modern life, which is why the Ventura County Office of Education is supporting a statewide effort to make it available to everyone.
The California Broadband Council is spreading the word that low-income families can receive a $30 monthly discount on home internet service and a $100 discount on a computer or tablet. There are about 80,000 households in Ventura County who are eligible for these discounts that haven’t yet applied.
More information about the program is available at www.internetforallnow.org.
