Information and News
Test Text Message on Monday through DOE Messages App
This Monday, a Test Text to parent/guardian cell phones on records will be sent at/around 10:00 AM.
- Test: You have received this Message from LaGuardia HS as part of a test of the school's communications. There is no action required.
We plan on sending text messages to parents/guardians (never students) in the event of a critical safety need. Information to families -- and, possibly instructions -- will be sent in the event of building evacuation, emergency, etc. NYCPS is preparing pre-approved messages that will allow us to notify families more quickly in an actual situation.
Updating your Contact Information in NYCSA (especially if you do not receive the Test Text on Monday)
If you are a parent who lives with your child, or if you are a custodial guardian, you can update your own home, cell, and work phone numbers and email address of yourself or other additional adults on your child’s record in your NYC Schools Account, using the Emergency Contact page. You also have the option to update your preferred written or spoken language.
Coffee & Donuts with Our Parent Coordinator
Dear LaGuardia Parents,
We will kick off our traditional Coffee and Donuts series with Assistant Principal of Safety, Mr. Greg Brummell. I am so excited to welcome Mr. Brummell once again as he will share with us invaluable information regarding best drug prevention practices and how we can keep LaGuardia safe as a community. Additionally, I am delighted to share that Mr. Falk, our SAPIS counselor will be in attendance. Please join me for this remarkable start to the school year, on Friday, October 11, between 9:00am and 10:30am. If you are able to attend, please reply to this email no later than Thursday, October 10, by 12 noon. Upon entering the building, you will be directed to our meeting spot.
If coming to campus is not possible; we plan on placing recordings of Coffee and Donuts on the website.
As always, looking forward to continuing our conversation,
Jerrianna

Whether your child is thinking about attending a two- or four-year college, is going straight into the workforce, or isn’t sure what they want to do after high school, the PSAT/NMSQT can help make their path clearer.
Results from the PSAT/NMSQT provide insights into your child’s academic strengths, along with areas they can work on while still in high school. Please see last week's YS for the complete CollegeBoard letter.

Phenomenal weekend on the cross-country end. At the Xavier Invitational, the Girls Cross Country team took 4th place. There were over 100 competitors, led by Gwyneth Shupp, 2nd overall; Virginia Begley taking 19th ;, Ginny Lindstrom, 21st; Chloe Merrill, 29th; Ivy Seidenstein, 40th; and Lila Leonard taking 48th. Special shoutout to Gwyneth Shupp on running the fastest time in school history – and the 7th fastest time in PSAL history – on the Ocean Breeze course.
At the Bob Pratt Invite, it was Naomi Douglas who shined yet again running the fastest time of the day obliterating her own record on the Sunken Meadow course. Not only did she break her own record the following week by over 20 seconds, she also became the first female runner to run a sub 19 on one of the most grueling courses in the nation.
On the boys side it was Ariel Yaron and Ezekiel Cohen taking 3rd and 4th place; and Martin Kientz, 39th place. These results, along with Matthew Rooney’s and Wyatt Weller’s, helped the team take 7th place overall. Ariel and Ezekiel's times mark the fastest and second fastest times in school history on the Ocean Breeze course, as well as the 9th and 10th fastest time in league history on this course.

Career Essentials, a Free After School Program by Futures and Options
Career Essentials is a career-readiness program that enables students to develop and practice their skills in communication, public speaking, resume writing, time management, and other workplace expectations. Through a series of 10 workshops (traditionally held after-school), students gain valuable professional skills, explore potential career pathways, and network with other NYC high school students.
You’re not meant to know everything and that’s what Career Essentials is for. I do reference things I learned at Futures and Options quite often.
–Tarannum Arpie, Career Essentials, Spring 2022normalHow Career Essentials Works
- New York City high school students within the five boroughs are eligible to apply. We welcome applications from students who are interested in expanding their work-readiness skills and want to network with their peers and learn from real employers.
- Students attend 10 workshops that meet for two hours after school during either the fall or spring semesters. Students must commit to being on time to and attending all workshops and events associated with the Career Essentials program.
- Students work in teams to develop companies complete with mission statements, staffing plans, and marketing strategies for their Create-A-Company projects. Each team presents their company projects during the final workshop.
- Students will take field trips with our various employer partners to learn more about potential career pathways. Past trips have included visits with BlackRock, Salesforce, Voya Financial, among many others.
