MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - EMILY WEIR, PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER AT KINSNER ELEMENTARY
Mrs. Emily Weir, Physical Education teacher at Kinsner Elementary, is in her 9th year working at Strongsville City Schools. During Mrs. Weir’s time with our District, she has also been part of the teaching teams at Strongsville High School, Strongsville Middle School, Surrarrer Elementary, Muraski Elementary, and the Early Learning Preschool. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Mount Union and also has a Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership from the American College of Education. According to Mrs. Weir, “The Weir household bleeds Strongsville Green and White as both my mother-in-law and father-in law are retired Chapman Elementary teachers and my husband, Mr. Weir, teaches Health and Physical Education at the Middle School and is also the Girls Varsity Golf Coach at Strongsville High School! We love the Mustangs!”
“I have the best job ever! Gone are the days of “Gym Class.” I love collaborating with my PE colleagues across the district to create unique experiences for our students in Physical Education. Our lessons focus on essential skills and standards while revolving around our Model Mustang competencies: Innovative, Resilient, Collaborative, Global, and Empowered. Whether it's a carnival-themed lesson that teaches the mechanics of throwing and budgeting skills, a football training camp that targets essential game skills while fostering coachability, using technology for self-assessment of locomotor skills, or transforming our gym into a roller skating rink and golf range, our students are consistently engaged in activities that encourage them to step out of their comfort zones and support their journey to success. It is a privilege to witness their growth - physically, socially, and emotionally - in an active and engaging Physical Education environment. The relationships I have built with my students makes coming to school every day truly exciting.”
Thank you Mrs. Weir for your continued efforts in teaching our students important life skills, as part of your active classroom environment! #ModelMustang
SHS MUSTANG EXPRESS EARNS AWARDS AT ADA SHOW CHOIR COMPETITION
The Mustang Express performed last week at the Ada Show Choir competition, which featured high school groups from Ohio and Indiana. Their energetic “spy-themed” show earned the group 6th place overall.
SHS also had individual award winners - Junior Mya Phiri was selected as “Best Individual Performer” and Senior Ava Stewart was chosen as “Best Female Soloist” of the entire competition!
SCS VETERANS DAY RECOGNITIONS
Earlier this week, all of our schools held recognitions honoring veterans. Events included breakfasts, songs, parades, poetry, clap-outs, and flag raisings to pay respect to those who have made sacrifices for our country and its freedoms. Thank you to all who made Veterans Day special this year at SCS.
WHITNEY ELEMENTARY 2ND GRADERS ADOPT A CALF
Mrs. Bova’s 2nd grade class at Whitney Elementary recently “adopted” a calf through the Discover Dairy Adopt a Cow program. ‘Peony’ was born last month weighing in at 100 lbs and 32 inches. In conjunction with this program, the America's Favorite Calf contest gave students and families the opportunity to vote for their calf. With over 152,000 votes submitted, Peony was the winner of America’s vote! Peony and the farm where she lives (Four Pines Farm) received a calf care package that included a calf blanket, apples, a grooming brush, and a personalized ear tag!

Tuesday, November 19th / 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. Join Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour for fun writing exercises and a writer's workshop! “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” William Shakespeare uses this line in his play Romeo and Juliet to convey that the naming of things is irrelevant. Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour disagrees. Names are somewhat central to our identities, maybe even helping to shape our destinies to some extent. Some of us have nicknames, and some famous people (including Beyoncé) are known by mononyms. Many of us just answer to whatever trendy, retro, or unique names our parents happened to choose for us BUT in this workshop, we are going to consider alternative names for ourselves—serious, silly, make believe or possibly outrageous, building on prompts, she will provide to kick start our creative brain cells. All are welcome, no prior writing experience is required.
