This Week @ PS 88Q
March 17, 2024
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
I hope everyone had a wonderful week. Happy St. Patrick's Day! For many years, this month, March, truly represented March Madness in my house. My two daughters we avid basketball players, and Irish Step Dancers. All roads lead to March for both! We would run from basketball games all throughout the city, to the many dancing shows as well. I remember one specifically where my daughter was ready to go on the court, still wearing her irish dancing curls wig! Ah, those were the days, but they are all grown up now, and March madness has surely changed.
Many of you are in that routine right now, maybe not basketball and dance, but the constant running, Running to get them to school, to extra curricular activities, while you are running to work, and all the other things we are responsible for. You will look back years from now and wonder how you did it, but you all do it everyday! We are so happy at PS 88Q to be part of those memories, and are always here to make this time easier, more manageable and supportive as possible. I will say, when that hustle and bustle is gone, you will miss it!
This week we enter our third week of March. The weather has been great, supporting some fun activities outside. We are so close to the opening of our school yard! i know it seems like forever, but it appears timing will be perfect, right in coordination with the warmer weather. The large school yard is first, and then the smaller one will be under construction. I am adding some pictures below to remind every one of what it will look like.
Have a great week!

Ya Gotta Read
Ms. Corniel is heading up an amazing initiative and wonderful opportunity! Our students have already began and are doing AMAZING!
The Mets launched “Ya Gotta Read!” in 2017 to foster a love of reading in students. The more children read, the more they succeed in school. It’s also linked to expanded knowledge and vocabulary, improved attention span and memory and increased curiosity and imagination.
Thanks to a partnership with the Amazin’ Mets Foundation and Delta Air Lines, the program has expanded to impact a total of approx. 50,000 students at 34 elementary schools in Queens and Brooklyn.
For the 2024 edition of Ya Gotta Read!, the Mets and Delta are challenging students to read for 20 minutes every school night for six weeks, coinciding with Mets Spring Training. The more minutes students read, the more Mets prizes they earn.
Students who read for 60 minutes hit a single, and win a Mets eraser set. Reading for 180 minutes is a double and gets students a color-in notebook. Reading for 300 minutes counts as a triple and earns students a jersey drawstring backpack. Finally, reading for 600 minutes means students hit a home run and win a pair of Mets tickets.
In addition, the student at each school who reads the most will win four Field Level tickets to a Mets game, be honored on the Jumbotron at Citi Field and receive a $100 Citi Field Gift Card!
The class at each school that reads the most will win special Mets bucket hats!
