From Mr. Mahoney
December 2022
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
I hope each of you had a chance to relax and enjoy the winter break. I am reaching out to share some important information prior to our return from break on January 3rd, 2023. Please take a few moments to read through the information below.
New High School Cell Phone and Personal Electronics Device Policy:
It has become evident that the non-academic use of cell phones and/or personal electronics during instructional time can seriously impede and distract from the learning process. Students using their cell phone and/or personal electronics when it is not part of the instructional lesson are not fully engaged in learning and can be a distraction to others. In order to preserve the most effective teaching and learning environment, free of distractions and disruptions, a new cell phone and personal electronics policy will take effect in the high school when students return on January 3rd, 2023. The new policy will replace what is currently in the student handbook. Please click on this link to view the new policy.
ELA Regents for Juniors:
In previous years, all 11th grade students took the ELA Regents exam in January of their junior year. This provided the opportunity for students to either improve their score or, if needed, to achieve a passing grade in June. This practice was paused the past two years due to the cancellation and the uncertainty of Regents exams being offered due to the impact of Covid on schooling.
Now that we are back to a normal Regents Exam schedule, we have decided to reinstate this practice and all juniors will be taking the ELA Regents exam this January. In order to ensure we get the best outcome possible for each student, the following guidelines will be in place:
All ELA 11 students will take the exam in January.
Students who earn an 80 or above have the option to retake the Regents exam in June if they choose, but they do not have to.
Students who earn between 70-80 must retake the Regents exam or take a course final of equal length and rigor in June.
Students below a 70 must retake the Regents exam in June. These students will participate in additional Regents prep.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at, mmahoney@gananda.org or 315-986-3521 extension 3154.
Thank you,
Mr. Mahoney
