Woodbury Weekly Update for Families
August 23, 2024
Welcome to our weekly update! We are thrilled to keep you informed about the happenings at our school, celebrations & achievements and upcoming events, ensuring you're an active part of your students educational journey. In each update, you'll find some quick highlights of the past week and a preview of what's to come. Our hope is to foster a strong sense of community and collaboration between the school and our cherished families. Most weeks will be brief, but at times there is important information or updates that help support us in your involvement in our little school. Thank you for taking the time to read it!
Miss Bols' class comes together for a class meeting. Morning (or afternoon) Meeting is an engaging way to start or end each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically.
Thank you to all of our families who attended curriculum night and supported our first book fair of the year. Your partnership and support means so much! We had a great first full week of learning and readjusting to being at school. It takes time for our bodies to adjust to schedules and for our students to adapt to the rigor of the day. I am sure some of our students are falling in a pile at night (and maybe some of the adults too!). Next week we begin fall benchmarking. This assessment helps us determine where are students are at with reading and math skills to start the school year and allows us to set individual goals for students, make instructional decisions and help shape our WIN (What I Need) time for students. Next week 2nd grade will be going on a field trip to Hoover. As a reminder to parents, any volunteers need to have a background check through our office to both volunteer and attend field trips. Looking forward to another great week ahead!
A Peek at the Week Ahead....
8:26: Fall Fastbridge Benchmark assessments begin.
8/27: 2nd Grade Hoover Field Trip
9/2: NO SCHOOL, Labor Day
9/6: NO SCHOOL, Non-Attendance Day

CHAMPS Walk
We went on a CHAMPS walk today! This was a chance for students to revisit our common expectations throughout the different areas of the school building (hallway, lunchroom, recess, bathroom, library). CHAMPS stands for Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation and Success! It’s is an adjustable framework, also used in the classroom, to communicate expectations for an activity or task. When students know what to expect, it leads to less redirection and behavior, helps support a safe and orderly environment, and often leads to more time for learning, engagement and FUN!
News from PE: Mrs. Martin
Dear Parents/Guardians-
My name is Mrs. Martin, and I am your child’s PE Teacher. My goal is for everyone to feel safe and successful as they learn how to stay healthy and active. In this class students will develop a positive attitude toward physical activity and will learn the techniques needed to develop healthy habits, which will hopefully continue throughout their lives.
Students will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy PE. They will also be encouraged to participate to the best of their ability in a wide variety of activities and games. Students will learn basic ways of moving and will have the opportunity to participate in games and fitness activities to enhance their overall health/wellness and skill related fitness levels. Throughout the year, students will be expected to stay on task, try their best, be kind to others and the equipment, be respectful and responsible, and to show good sportsmanship.
Tennis shoes will be required. Crocs, Hey Dudes, boots, flip flops, fancy shoes are not safe and should not be worn to PE. Please help your child to learn how to tie their own shoes.
As we move into September, we will work on the following activities and skills: Practicing gym rules and routines, moving safely in the gym, fitness games and activities, soccer and frisbee.
I would like to introduce Mr. Tronc (“Mr. T.”), he is going to be my student teacher this year for 8 weeks until October 11 and then he will be transferring to the middle school for another 8 weeks. He comes to us from NIU.
Fun Facts about Mr. Tronc- He has documented and recorded over 75 scuba dives. He grew up playing baseball, soccer, and ran track.
