Welcome to Westview
Class of 2023
ABOUT ME
I want to welcome you to Westview and hope that you have settled into your classes and things are going well for you. I know it probably feels like you have been here at WV forever- right? I’ll be running around to homeroom classes trying to introduce myself so you can put a “face to the name” but wanted to extend a warm welcome to you personally and tell you a little about myself. This is my 14th year at Westview. I live in the community and have four children and one grandson. As a family, we love to do outdoor activities such as going to the beach, camping, snow skiing or enjoying our backyard pool. This a photo of me this summer in Costa Rica.
HOW I CAN HELP YOU
You may wonder what a counselor does... well, EVERYTHING! In a nutshell I am here to help you in your transition into adulthood and support you in deciding who you are, what you do well, and what you will do when you graduate. My job is to support you with your academic, career, and personal/social needs. What do I mean by all that? Some things that I can help you with are:
- Assist in selecting appropriate courses
- Show you how to develop a 4-year plan
- Inform you about high school graduation and college admission requirements
- Provide academic skills support such as organizational, study, and test-taking skills
- Help you with college & career planning
- Assist you in communication, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, and coping strategies
- Talk to you about problems that may be bothering you with friends/family
- Help you navigate the college application process during senior year
- Someone you can come to when you don’t know who to ask or are just having a bad day
- Be a familiar face
HOW DO I ACCESS COUNSELING
There are a lot of resources you can access in the Wolverine Center Like I said, the counseling team does a ton to help support you in high school and beyond! Feel free to stop by my office in the Wolverine Center during lunch, Wolverine Time or after school to say "hi." If you have quick questions about anything you are welcome to email me at aberner@powayusd.com.
Please read the newsletters that are sent every month, usually on Fridays - they are full of information. It is important to “stay in touch” and some other ways to do that is for yourself and your parents to:
Follow @WestviewCounsel on Twitter
Like “Westview Counseling” on Facebook
@Westview.counseling on Instagram
I will be sending out invitations for you to come join me at lunch time. DON’T fear when you get the invite; just bring your lunch so we get to know each other. I am looking forward to getting to know you!
First Tip
It is VERY important for students to have their email addresses on MyPlan! You can add the student email address under “Parent VUE/ Student Info/ Edit Info” and at the bottom of the page you will see “Add Student Email.” Within the next week, information will be coming to you in homeroom on how to open your Naviance account. I will be sending emails periodically as well as "assignments" for you to do on Naviance which will help you develop your post high school plans.
