February is Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions made by Black heroes throughout history. At BHS, our Black Student Union (BSU) plans our annual Black History Month Assembly. This year, BSU welcomes Rochester City Court Judge, and BHS graduate, Van White for a special presentation.
In recent years, it’s also become a time to strengthen allegiance and support with marginalized communities. Each of the school buildings in Brighton will be celebrating learning together with a variety of presentations, literature, and/or activities.
Our families and community can join in, too! Celebrate Black History Month with Smithsonian events, resources, exhibitions, and podcasts. The 2025 theme for Smithsonian is "African Americans and Labor" with a focus on the various and profound ways that work of all kinds intersects with the collective experiences of Black people.
Additionally, there are many local celebrations for both adults and children including some listed below:
· Celebrating Black History – City of Rochester
· Memorial Art Gallery - Black History Month
· Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library
Resources to learn more about Black History Month
· National Geographic for Kids
· National Museum of African American History and Culture

Please join me in sending the entire cast, crew, and directors of Mama Mia, a HUGE SHOUT OUT for a tremendous show this past weekend. The show was absolutely incredible with tremendous energy, professional acting, beautiful singing, and show stopping fun.
The adult directors and student directors/volunteers taking care of costumes, lighting, sound, choreography, and props, deserve a HUGE THANK YOU as well. Without them, the show could not go on!
So proud of all of you! YOU MAKE BHS a wonderful place to work and go to school. GO BRUINS!
Brighton HS students advance to semifinals in online Regional Oceanography Bowl
Juniors, Eli Gray and Matheesha Jayawardhane, led their Rochester Area science competition team to the National Ocean Bowl’s Regional Sponge Bowl online competition! They competed with two other fellow teammates from area high schools. According to Coach Kelvin Knight, “It was a virtual online mental slug fest! We won some and lost some! But, we made it to the finals after a four-way tie score. We ultimately outmatched all the other tied teams by having a higher point scored per round average! They competed all day online at U of R’s River Campus on 2/8/2025. They competed against some of the top schools from Texas to Long Island!”
KUDOS Eli and Matheesha. You make BHS PROUD!
2/8/25 Blood Drive Results
KUDOS to the BHS Red Cross Club for sponsoring last weekend’s blood drive. They are happy to report that we collected 41 units, enough to impact 123 lives! RED CROSS CLUB, you make BHS PROUD!

LINEWIZE and how families can monitor their student’s browsing history
As part of our commitment to your child’s online safety, our school has partnered with Qustodio, the world’s leading provider of online safety solutions. As devices play an increasing role in children’s education it is crucial that we put safeguards in place. Your child already benefits from internet filtering technology which blocks inappropriate web content on their school-owned device while at school. We are going one step further and granting every parent a free Qustodio Parental App account. Qustodio will give you important insights into your child’s online activity on their school device.
A representative from Linewize will be presenting this app at our next PTSA meeting and explaining how parents can use this to have greater control over the school-issued device at home and two other personal devices.
