Learning, teaching and growing in new role
GET TO KNOW EMILY SEEFELDT
The first week of school is filled with excitement as the year gets underway and we welcome students back to a new school year. I have been fortunate to experience this first-week excitement for my 19th year in Red Wing Public Schools. This past July, I moved into the role of director of teaching & learning. I am also the district assessment coordinator.
I have spent my entire career in Red Wing, I started as an early childhood special education teacher at Colvill Family Center and Sunnyside Elementary. After six years in ECSE, I transitioned to a third grade teacher at Burnside Elementary where I spent eight years.
I moved into the Teaching & Learning Department as a teacher on special assignment where I had a variety of roles over the last few years: positive behavioral interventions and supports
(PBIS) coach, instructional coach, Teaching & Learning coordinator, and district assessment coordinator.
I have my bachelor's from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in both early childhood education and early childhood special education, a master's in differentiated instruction from Concordia-St. Paul, a K-12 reading licensure from Hamline University and an admin license in K-12 principalship from St. Cloud State.
I wear my love of learning proudly and believe in perpetually learning, growing, and expanding depth of knowledge. We have many upcoming exciting teaching and learning initiatives.

Prairie Island Youth Royalty welcome you to the Wacipi
Prairie Island Indian Community Youth Royalty Jayme Johnson, Aurora Boldt and Hunter Erickson will be representing Prairie Island at the He Mni Can Wacipi on Saturday, Sept. 14, which will begin at 10 a.m. at Red Wing High School.
He Mni Can Wacipi celebrates Dakota heritage
The inaugural He Mni Can Wacipi (powwow), to be Saturday, Sept. 14, at Red Wing High School.
This event will honor the Dakota people and celebrate their heritage through a series of activities aimed at cultural preservation and celebration, educational outreach, community building, and youth engagement. Everyone is invited. The He Mni Can Wacipi will begin at 10 a.m. with an education session featuring Larry Yazzie and Native Pride Productions.
"By sharing life stories through music, dance, and storytelling, we nurture meaningful communication among all people," Yazzie said.
Red Wing High School's Native American Student Association members helped to plan this event as well as assemblies on Sept. 13 for K-12 students. NASA members then will participate in Saturday's wacipi.
Red Wing, named after Dakota Chief Red Wing, is situated on the ancestral homeland of the
Dakota people. This powwow holds special significance as it reintroduces such an event on this
original homeland. The powwow will feature Dakota drummers, singers, dancers, and artisans.
Ceremonial dances, intertribal dances, and community participation will create an inclusive
atmosphere of celebration and respect.

You're 'bound' to be interested!
We're talking books ... fairs and yearbooks
The Twin Bluff Book Fair last spring was a huge success. The students really enjoyed shopping for books in multiple genres that interest them.
This year we'd like to have a parent volunteer to take charge of the book fairs: one in November and another in April if possible.
If you'd like to help out and or be the coordinator, please reach out to Kelly Kolby in the main office. We hope to keep this fun and beneficial event going.
We also still have a few extra 2023-2024 yearbooks available. The cost is still only $20.
