Mohegan Update 10/25
October 25, 2024
This was such a busy week! I spent time on the roof on Monday, we had a visit from the Fire Department on Wednesday, and all week we raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness with Pink Week!
PARENT CONFERENCES
Thank you to all the parents who took time out of their busy schedules to attend parent conferences over the past 2 weeks. If you could not make conferences and wish to speak with your child’s teacher, please call the school and the teacher will be happy to set up a time to speak with you.
FIRE SAFETY DAY
I want to thank the Shelton Fire Department for coming out to Mohegan Elementary School for FIre Safety. Students got to see a fire truck and learn about different kinds of trucks and what they are used for. They also got to see a fireman in his gear and how the equipment works. Two things we would like all families to discuss at home: First, please check the smoke detectors in your home. Explain to your children how and why we do it. Second, have a meeting place for the family should there be a fire in the house. This can be a neighbor’s house, a mailbox, or any fixed structure away from the house. Knowing this information may save the life of a loved one.
PINK WEEK
Mohegan Elementary School recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We raised over $1,000 which will be donated to the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital. I want to thank all the students and families for supporting this important cause. In addition to wearing pink all week, we were happy to hang up the fliers of breast cancer survivors and fighters from your families to recognize them. As the son of a brave woman who had breast cancer, I encourage everyone to get screened regularly according to your doctor’s wishes. Early detection can save lives.
BLACK AND ORANGE DAY
October 31st will be Black and Orange Day at Mohegan Elementary School. Students are encouraged to wear Orange and Black on this day. Halloween themed shirts are allowed, but no costumes.
ELECTION DAY
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. There is No School on Election Day.
PICTURE MAKE UP DAY
Picture make up day is on Thursday, November 7th. Students who missed picture day will get their pictures taken. All photos that were taken on October 8th were emailed to parents. If you want to have your child re-take his/her picture, there is a $10 cash fee on make up day.
VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day will be celebrated at Mohegan School on Monday, November 11th. We will have a ceremony to honor family members of our students who are Veterans. The Veterans Day Ceremony will be at 2pm in the afternoon. More information about how to sign up to follow.
SCHOOL CALENDAR
I encourage all parents to please adhere to the school calendar when planning family trips. Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to have higher grades compared to students who miss more days of school. In addition, attendance is one of the criteria that is counted toward our report card with the state of Connecticut. When students are absent for vacations, those absences can add up and ultimately count against us. Teachers are not required to provide work in advance for students who will be out of school for vacations which means students have to make up the work upon their return. The 2024-2025 school calendar can be found here.
PRE-K NEWS
As a reminder, Connecticut immunization regulations require students ages 24-59 months attending Pre-K to receive at least one dose of the Flu vaccine between August 1st and December 31st. If this is the first time your child is ever receiving the Flu vaccine, two doses administered at least 28 days apart is required by the Connecticut immunization regulations. Please call your Pediatrician to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to prevent any delays or vaccine shortages! If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Cristina.
PBIS SCHOOL WIDE REWARD
Every month, students have an opportunity to earn a school wide reward for positive behavior. Any student with 1 or fewer office referrals in the month gets the reward. It is important that students are recognized for meeting academic and behavior expectations. October’s school wide PBIS reward… Doodle Day!!
