Thank you to everyone for your participation in Parent/Teacher Conferences. This is a wonderful time to connect with your student's teacher(s) and receive feedback on areas of strength and growth. If you were unable to attend, please continue to reach out to the teacher for feedback.
Last Friday we had a fantastic African-American Read-In! A HUGE thank you to Ms. Paguada-Gutierrez for her event organization and to all the visiting readers. We had many family members, JCPS staff, Atherton High School students, and community members read and engage our students. It was an amazing opportunity to open our school to the community and have students participate in engaging conversations around literacy and culture!
Here is one final BIG push to complete the Comprehensive School Survey. There are student incentives connected to family completion. Please take time to complete the short survey and provide school and district feedback. Links are in the newsletter below. We appreciate your help!

Important Information
Comprehensive School Survey- ONE LAST BIG PUSH!
SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK | It’s time to share your feedback regarding Hawthorne and JCPS! Recently, JCPS sent out Comprehensive School Survey (CSS) links. The 2025 Comprehensive School Survey is open now through February 28, 2025.
Please take a moment to complete this important survey and let your voices be heard. It’s completely anonymous, and results are used to improve our schools—everything from school climate and curriculum to safety and more. It’s available in multiple languages, too!
At Hawthorne, we use this data to drive decisions. It’s one data point that provides needed feedback on our systems, climate and culture, and instruction. Our staff and fourth/fifth grade students also take the survey. We appreciate your time and feedback!
Take the survey now through Feb. 28 at bit.ly/JCPSCSS25. Thank you for sharing your feedback and supporting JCPS!
To encourage families to complete this survey, we are offering school-wide incentives, such as the chance to win a Car Rider Fast Pass for the last 3 months of school! Please see more information on the flyers below. A direct link to the survey is below, too.
New Staff Member
We welcome Alicia Rice as a new ECE IA. She begins this week! She is the Hawthorne parent to first grader, Michael, and a pre-K student, Joseph. She will support our Autism and MSD classrooms!
We are very excited to welcome her to our staff family!
African-American Read-In SHOUT OUTS!
What a wonderful event on Friday! We had fabulous readers join us from the community, including parents, JCPS staff, and Atherton High School students! JCPS Board Members Ms. Strange and Mr. Bass joined as guest readers, too! Our students were actively engaged in the books and had great conversations and questions!
A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Ms. Paguada-Gutierrez for organizing another amazing event and to our staff for welcoming and supporting our readers. Ms. Neighbours was masterful at recruiting readers- thank you!
The read-in provides an opportunity for students to engage with new faces and new literature. It also stregthens our community and promotes a strong sense of belonging for our Black and Afro-Latinx students. We received many compliments regarding our school and positive climate and culture! Thank you for your participation and engagement.

Illness and Return Procedures
It's that time of year where we are facing student and staff illness. If your student does not feel well and exhibits any cold like symptons, please keep the student home! If the student has a fever or is vomiting, the student MUST stay home until cleared. Please see below for the return to school protocol.
If your student has been diagnosed with Flu A, Flu B, COVID, or strep throat, it needs to be reported for Health Department reporting protocol. Please email the school: hawkoffice@jefferson.kyschools.us AND Nurse Gina: v.gnelso1@jefferson.kyschools.us
In your email, please include the following information:
- date of diagnosis and how they tested (home test or doctor)
- the symptoms the student is having
Here is the JCPS return to school protocol:
- Students can return to school/work when their symptoms have been improving for 24 hours AND they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
When students/employees diagnosed with COVID-19, Flu or RSV go back to their normal activities, they must take added precaution over the next 5 calendar days, which includes masking, frequent handwashing, and maintaining physical distancing as much as possible. According to 902 KAR 2:020 fever is defined as 100.4F or greater.
We do our best to sanitize all areas of the school, but please encourage your student to thoroughly wash hands often and to cover his/her mouth when sneezing.

This in-school dental visit is typically at no cost to families—Medicaid, KCHIP, and most insurance plans are accepted, and a low-cost self-pay option is available. If your child is seen at the in-school dental clinic and your insurance is billed, this will count as one of their routine 6-month dental visits. If it has not been at least 6 months since their last dental appointment, they will not be eligible to be seen at the clinic.
If you have questions please contact Elvira Paguada-Gutierrez, HFRC Coordinator, at 502.315.0892 or elvira.paguada@jefferson.kyschools.us
