Classroom Updates
Kindergarten
Happy Holiday’s kinder families!
Your children are working and learning so much in reading and math. In reading we are continuing to learn letter names and sounds. We are also starting to read and write simple words with the letters we have learned. We are also working hard on our sight words by writing them and placing them in a sentence. In math students are working hard on learning things that are taller, shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, and equal. See if you can test your child and see if they can tell you something that his longer or shorter than an object! Students will next be working on number bonds and how they help them see the parts and totals. We the kindergarten team, are so proud of the growth each student is making! We can’t wait to see what more they will do in the last 5 months of kindergarten!
1st Grade
These next couple months are a busy time in first grade! In reading, we will be in our third unit of Wonders. Our new phonics skills will focus on magic e and soft g and soft c. We will continue working on sight words and building reading fluency. In math, we will be working on properties of operations to make problems easier. In science, we will begin learning about light and sound. In social studies we will be learning about Holidays around the world and how different cultures celebrate!
2nd Grade
Second grade will be working on Unit 3 for reading and we will look at author's purpose, sequencing, and key details. In math students will be working on addition and subtraction strategies. For social studies students are looking in to civics and exploring how decisions are made in our community. During science students are exploring properties of matter. Please continue to read with your child at home as well as practice math facts! Make sure to check the Google Site for weekly updates!
3rd Grade
Third Grade has been working hard. In the next few months we are going to focus on multiplication and division. With multiplication and division we are focusing on using known facts to help with the distributive property. In science we are learning about animals and their traits. In social studies we are focusing on holidays around the world and geography. In reading our focus will be on author’s purpose, main idea and key details. In writing we are going to be doing a planet research project. We are excited for all the amazing things the kiddos will be working on. Have a great holiday season from third grade!
4th Grade
Hello Fourth Grade Families!
As we move into December and January, many exciting things are planned! We’ll start our Mesa’s 12 Days of Christmas Countdown in December with many fun dress-up days planned to celebrate the holiday season – please keep an eye out for the calendar to include dress-up themes. In addition, we’ll be completing our second round of our district Illuminate testing, which helps track student progress in both Reading and Math and gives us important information to help best plan lessons for the days ahead.
In math, we’ll start our dive into our next Module, where students will focus on multiplying and dividing multidigit numbers. Please continue practicing those basic math facts with students every night to help with all of our fourth-grade standards. In science, we’ll continue exploring our second unit, learning about how animals use vision and other senses to survive in their environments. Please make sure to continue to have your child practice reading nightly and talk to you about what they are reading — it is so important to help build their comprehension skills, vocabulary, and a love for reading that will support their success in all subjects! It will be an exciting and busy time for our 4th graders — we look forward to all the fun and learning ahead!
5th Grade
Hello Fifth Grade Families!
December:
December will be an exciting month of learning! In ELA, students will explore expository and argumentative texts, strengthen their vocabulary with Latin roots, and practice identifying main ideas and author’s point of view. They’ll also begin a research project on holiday traditions around the world. In Math, we’ll focus on multiplying and dividing fractions, especially unit fractions and whole numbers, and wrap up our unit on converting units of measurement. In Science, we’ll continue our study of matter, investigating its properties and behaviors. In Social Studies, we’ll prepare for our field trip to Young Ameritowne by exploring economics, government, and philanthropy, while learning about various jobs and job applications.
January:
Happy New Year! After the break, we’ll dive into new learning. In ELA, we’ll study biographies and dramas, work on summarizing texts, and write a biography about a historical figure. In Math, we’ll continue working with fractions and start a unit on decimal place value. In Science, we’ll explore solubility and the properties of matter in more depth. In Social Studies, we’ll get ready for Young Ameritowne by practicing job interviews, job training, and managing checkbooks.
We look forward to a great start to 2025!
