Jackson Journal
June 2024
County Updates
June... Already???
As we typed and finalized this month's Jackson Journal it really doesn't seem like summer weather. More like we have been stuck in "April showers" this past month. Hopefully you've taken advantage of the rainy days to work on 4-H projects like indoor gardening, sewing, practicing your instrument, or perfecting a recipe you found on TikTok or was passed down from a relative. Regardless of your rainy day activities, let's hope June is filled with more days at the lake, time spent working with 4-H animals, gardening, sports activities, outdoor adventures, and also the many other events on the all too busy summer schedules.
Want to hear something wild??? 50 days. That is what separates us from the first day of the Jackson County Fair! Have we scared you yet? Deep breath. We'll get through this one day at a time and with grace, patience, and communication.
Speaking of communication - this months Jackson Journal is full of County Fair topics you do not want to skim over. Our annual Peach fundraiser, FairEntry "how to", the Premium book, food stand schedules, and upcoming events are just some of the topics we want to highlight as IMPORTANT.
Congrats to all of our 4-H'ers who survived another school year and our 4-H Seniors who have now graduated from high school and have one year left of being a 4-H member. (Don't worry though, alumni always have a place here in Jackson Co.!) We are so proud of all of you!
One more thing - WELCOME Meta Tewes - as our 4-H Summer intern! Please read Meta's intro letter below and feel free to stop by the office to say hi. She will be busy with day camps, county fair prep, and so much more this summer. If you would like to help be a volunteer with any of the activities/events she will be coordinating contact the office.
Wishing you all a safe and happy start to your summer months :)
Caitlyn, Jazlyn, and Meta
Welcome Meta Tewes - Jackson Co. 4-H Summer Intern!
Hello everyone!
My name is Meta Tewes and I will be the 4-H intern for this summer! I am currently going into my third year at South Dakota State University where I am majoring in Agricultural Education and Animal Science. I am an alumni of the Jackson program (Middletown Livewires club) and showed cattle and sheep throughout my 4-H career as well as competed on the livestock judging team.
I think that the experiences that I have gained through 4-H are the foundation of my values and have shaped me into the person that I am today. Some of my main duties for this internship include helping with the day camps, assisting with the county fair and helping put on the livestock judging contest after the county fair. If you see me around the office and at some other events, do not be hesitant to stop and say ‘hi’.
Thanks,
Meta Tewes

Start Planning your 4-H Projects for Presentation Judging Day!
Hey 4-H'ers!
- Have you or do you plan to give a club presentation or demonstration?
- Do you play a musical instrument or sing or dance - maybe acting is more your style?
- Love writing stories, poems, or research papers and sharing them with others?
- What about sewing and clothing? - Do you like showing off the clothes you buy or make to friends and family? Maybe you have some great sewing skills and are proud of the pillowcase you made?
- Ever pretend to run a restaurant or have you even planned a fancy dinner?
If you said YES! to any of these, you are the perfect participant for Performance Arts Judging Day! Judging for the following 4-H project areas takes place on July 9, 2024 from 1 P.M. - 5 P.M. at the Jackson County High School Auditorium. In order to register your projects you will need to enter them on FairEntry (portal opens May 25). Youth and their projects must be in the building by 4pm to be judged.
4-H at the Jackson County Fair - Information and Updates
Check out the 2024 Jackson County 4-H Premium Book!
This book is your guide to registering for the 2024 Jackson County Fair. Be sure to take time to read through the letter, rules, policies, and other important information as this book is home to anything related to the county fair.
Register Exhibits for the 2024 Jackson County Fair, NOW! CLOSES JUNE 25
Registration for the county fair is now open in FairEntry (http://jackson-county.fairentry.com). During the fair registration process, youth declare which projects they are showcasing at the county fair. This process is separate from 4-H Online animal identification. All county fair registration is due on June 25 for general and animal science projects.
Please note, families will attach their identified animals to a specific class in FairEntry. MN 4-H policy allows animals to move between siblings up until the county fair check in point.
A good rule of thumb might be to break all animals to be registered up such that each family member gets about the same number of the animals in their name.
For example, if the John Doe family has ID’d 12 animals and there are three siblings in the John Doe family, you might consider registering in FairEntry 4 animals in each sibling’s name. It is also a good practice to put at least one animal under each sibling. The determination of which sibling exhibits which animal at the county fair can then be delayed until the ID checkpoint at the county fair. It is at the county fair ID checkpoint for each species that animals must be declared by a specific sibling and cannot be switched to another sibling after that.

Winner's Circle at the Jackson County Fair
Jackson County 4-H wants to invite you all to join us at the 2024 Winner's Circle during the Jackson County Fair this year!
But first...
What is the Winner's Circle and why do we do it?
The Winners Circle is held the day after general entry day at the Jackson County Fair. This event is for the public and 4-H Families to come together to celebrate the successes of our 4-H members and Cloverbuds in the General Project areas. Not only do we recognize the Champions in each category, we also take a moment to celebrate our outgoing seniors, award senior scholarships, present the 2024 Jackson County Farm Family Award, and shed light on our incredible Cloverbud program.
We hope that you all can join us or stop in during this evening of recognition to kick off the 2024 Jackson County Fair!
Winner's Circle will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd at 5:30 pm in the Olson Pavilion
Immediately following, there will be a picture session where media and other interested parties
will be able to take pictures of the winners and their exhibits in the Blue Building.
Federated Rural Electric will have REA T-Shirts for pick up and will be handing out $10 to non-auction participants.
Jackson County Fair - Livestock Grooming Rule Reminder
Per the Jackson County 4-H and MN 4-H Premium Book and Rules.
All grooming of livestock, including clipping, trimming and manipulation of hair/wool (such as blocking on sheep, pulling up hair on beef and working up top lines on dairy) must be done by the exhibitor, members of the immediate family* or a livestock resource person** chosen by the 4-H family.
*Immediate family members are defined as parents, step-parents, legal guardians, brothers or sisters.
**A livestock resource person is defined as someone who is working with the 4-H’er/4-H family to help them learn management and fitting and grooming skills in their project area. An identified livestock resource person would be allowed to work with the 4-Her and their family during the fitting and grooming process to guide and teach these skills. The 4-H’er exhibiting the animal MUST be present and involved in the fitting process at the county fair.
NEW Cloverbud Policy Update!
The Minnesota 4-H Youth Development Cloverbud policy creates a uniform set of rules for participation to maintain developmental appropriateness and safety for our youngest 4-H members. A rule related to Cloverbuds and animals has been updated.
When Cloverbuds and animals are together at a 4-H program, families may now choose one of two acceptable ways to guide and monitor involvement in non-mounted activities:
1. The responsible person is in control of the animal with the Cloverbud at their side.
2. The Cloverbud is in control of the animal with the responsible person at their side to assist or take control of the animal when needed or as directed by staff, volunteers or show managers.
In the horse project, the second option does not apply to mounted activities. When a Cloverbud is mounted on a horse, the horse must always have a lead line and be under the control of the responsible person.
Cloverbud families may choose either option. The safety of all young people is maintained as a responsible person will be next to the Cloverbud and animal. The new option acknowledges the growth of the Cloverbud with their project animal and recognizes that many families are engaged in learning at open shows where the Cloverbud-aged youth are in control of the animal. Cloverbud exhibitions will continue to be non-competitive.
For more information regarding Cloverbud policies, visit: z.umn.edu/CloverbudPolicy

If funds are not available in the Federation Budget, the Extension Educator will propose to the Federation a change in budget allocations. The Jackson County 4-H Federation will then determine where the funds will be taken out to fulfill the request or deny the request.
