BES Brief for Parents
January 10, 2025
What are your goals for 2025?
Goal Setting
AT BES, all students set goals for academic achievement and personal growth. Students create plans to achieve their goals, and they revisit goals throughout the quarter or semester. Goal setting can be an important part of a student's academic and personal growth. It can help students develop skills, gain confidence, and improve their learning experience. Here are some steps we follow when we work with students on setting their goals:
- Set a small number of goals: Too many goals can be overwhelming and cause students to lose interest.
- Celebrate progress: Encourage students to celebrate milestones and other signs of progress.
- Develop a growth mindset: Encourage students to develop a growth mindset that focuses on personal development and learning.
- Learn to prioritize: Teach students how to prioritize projects and activities to value their time and resources.
- Develop critical thinking skills: Goal setting requires critical thinking skills that students will use long after high school.
By setting goals, tracking individual growth, and celebrating their accomplishments while reflecting on moments of struggle (and engaging in collaborative problem-solving), students practice metacognition, gain self-awareness, and widen their definition of success while learning.

School Based Wellness Initiative
Beaufort Elementary is working in partnership with MUSC to make our school a healthy, happy place to learn and grow! MUSC BCCW School-based Wellness Initiative works to create a culture of wellness by providing direct support and motivation for K-12 schools and districts as they implement evidence-based wellness strategies. This Initiative is not one specific program, but rather, a customizable model that supports a school in the selection and implementation of best practices and policies that best meet the needs of a school’s students and staff. The Initiative is designed to engage the entire school community in creating a healthy learning environment.
At Beaufort Elementary we encourage health and wellness for our students, staff, and families! Are you interested in supporting our initiatives? Here are some ways you can be involved:
- Find out when the school wellness committee meets. Ask if you can join! You can contact our Parent Liaison, Shannon Switzer for more information!
- Make a breakfast or lunch date with your child to show your support for your school nutrition department.
- Plan a healthy potluck during National Teacher Appreciation Week.
- Help the school connect with the community. Ask a local business to support physical activity by asking for equipment or providing bottled water or bananas for a fun run or walk.
- Be a part of our school garden team!
When families, school staff, and communities work together, students reap the rewards. Ensure our school is a place to learn, grow, and thrive by getting involved!
