Sundae Scholars
Students in grades first and second grade will be coming home with the list of second semester sight words. Students are encouraged to practice the sight words at home. Once your child can read each of the grade level sight words let us know using the Sundae Scholars form link. Mr. Atkins or Mrs. Hayden will test the students ready for the challenge and they will make their very own ice cream sundae during lunch.
Please note that the list of words for kindergarten is the same as first semester as they have fewer words overall. To challenge those kindergarten students who already earned the title Sundae Scholar by reading all 40 kindergarten words, they have the opportunity to earn a second semester sundae like the other grades by reading the first grade list for first semester! The teacher will send these home to those students.
Sight Word Lists
iReady Diagnostic
All students in grades kindergarten through second grade completed the i-Ready reading and i-Ready math diagnostics in December. Family reports will be coming home next week with the second quarter report cards. Although, there is still much work to be done to increase proficiency we are excited about the overall growth.
The first two images reflect the recent i-Ready diagnostic data. This diagnostic is taken the second week of school and the graphics below compare that data to the most recent.
The next two images are of school-wide data graphs posted in each hall. This serves as a reminder to staff of our school-wide goals, but more importantly it models that we are setting goals as a school and the importance of the work of both teachers and students. Students set their own i-Ready goals in the classroom tracking their progress to completing their pathway assignments and earning the i-Ready celebration (see last picture). This is just one example of how one kindergarten class tracks their data. Each student has their own card and colors the dot after successfully completing i-Ready lessons.
For more information on goal setting check out PBS Kids for Parents
Special Area Report
Counselor's Corner
This month, the School Counselor will continue to visit classrooms for whole group counseling lessons. In December, students completed Lesson 3: Identifying and Managing Emotions and Lesson 4: Effective Communication/Listening Skills. In January, students will work through Lesson 5.
Lesson 5: Bonding and Relationships.
Students learn healthy friendship qualities and the benefits of bonding with pro-social others. Students also demonstrate assertive communication using I-messages.
Be on the lookout for the Too Good Home Workout for adults and kids to do together.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Healthy Resolutions for Children in the New Year
Children ages 4 to 12 years old
· I will drink water or milk on most days and will keep soda and fruit drinks only for special
occasions.
· I will try to eat at least two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables every day.
· I will wash my hands after using the restroom and before meals.
· I will brush my teeth twice a day.
· I will practice good handwashing and cover my cough when I have a cold.
· I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car.
· I will try to find a physical activity or a sport I enjoy doing such as playing basketball or soccer, jumping rope, playing tag, dancing, or riding my bike at least three times a week.
· I will always wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter, or skateboard.
· I will dress warm in the winter and wear sunscreen in the summer when playing outside.
· I'll try to be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends by talking with them and inviting them to join activities.
· I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed.
· I will read for 20 minutes each day (with a family member if the child is unable to read independently).
Attendance
Absences
Please contact the main office if your child will be absent. The attendance clerk is expected to call the parents of all absent students. By calling the office, it will reduce the calls the attendance clerk is expected to make each day. More importantly, calling the office will reduce frustration for parents as at times, parents are sending text messages directly to the teacher so the office staff is not aware.

School Delays or Closings
How does the wind chill affect school being delayed or closed?
During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of the school day or cause school to be closed altogether. One such factor is the wind chill on a given day. On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service; a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning. The National Weather Service in Wilmington, OH defines the two as the following:
Wind Chill Advisory: Wind chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 6 MPH or more
Wind Chill Warning: Wind chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 6 MPH or more
When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Campbell County before the school day begins we will make a decision to close schools. It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before. If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problems in the school buildings. Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 AM.
As a parent if you determine that the weather conditions are too dangerous for your child to be out we respect your decision. You are free to contact your child’s school to request an excused absence for the day. Please make sure you contact the attendance office at your child’s school to report the absence.
Understand that the safety of our staff and students is our top priority when making the decision to delay or close school. We can assure you that our school buildings are warm, safe and an ideal place for students to be when it is extremely cold outside. Parents should make sure their child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather. The district urges students to wear winter hats, gloves, heavy coats and boots. Frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks and need to be taken into consideration by parents. If your child does not have a heavy coat, hat, boots or gloves please call the Family Resource Youth Service Center of his/her school; these centers have limited supplies to help those students in need.
To get more information on how the wind chill is calculated see the National Weather Service Wind Chill Chart from the National Weather Service.
Inclement Weather
When inclement weather arises, the Superintendent and his team will assess weather and road conditions before 5:00 a.m. If a delay or closure is necessary, notifications will be sent to all staff and student households via the School Messenger Alert System. Additionally, updates will be posted on our website at www.newportwildcats.org and shared with local television stations for wider dissemination.
This procedure also applies to other emergencies, such as power outages, water or heating issues, fires, floods, or similar situations, where the district determines adjustments to the school day are necessary for the safety of staff and students.
