WHAT'S THE SCOOP?
It's an exciting week with the 100th day of school on Tuesday, Global Play Day on Wednesday, and our Middle School Sole-Mate Dance on Friday! We can't wait to see all the old geezers show up for school Tuesday morning. Please see the GPD description below so your child is ready to play!
GLOBAL PLAY DAY
The initiative was started in 2015 by six educators who were concerned about the decreasing amount of playtime children receive due to technology and structured schedules. Sigsbee joined the fun several years ago. We are amazed by how impactful one day of technology-free interaction can be.
There will be minimal direction from staff, restricted only to ensuring everyone is safe.
Students are encouraged to bring:
- toys, games,
- building blocks,
- art materials,
- trucks, cars, boxes,
- dolls
- puzzles,
- board games.
The items should not be something the child values dearly (no trading cards, including Pokemon). No play weapons of any sort are permitted. The day will also include outdoor play!
Global School Play Day will run ALL DAY in most classrooms, so we ask that you allow our staff to engage with students completely. You can do this by reducing the number of emails sent, cutting down on interruptions to the classroom, and holding off on phone calls. We will only interrupt the play for emergencies.
Again, please remember that students are never allowed to bring toys that look like weapons to school- no guns, knives, swords, etc.
We are looking forward to an unforgettable day!
Global School Play Day Official Website - globalschoolplayday.com
We encourage you to extend GPD at home. Consider spending the evening playing a traditional card or board game, walking, going for a bike ride, or working on a puzzle. Perhaps this can become part of students' routine.

SCHOOL SAFETY- IT'S NO JOKE.
A message from the Superintendent of Schools.
Important School Safety Update for Parents/Guardians:
What if your child or you see a concerning or threatening post on social media? Report it using School TextTips or Fortify Florida (FortifyFL). Donβt repost it on social media. See something, say something. Tell a trusted adult.
However, one particular trend that is of great concern across the state is the sharp rise in false reports being submitted through FortifyFL. Making a threat on social media can result in life-altering consequences. It doesnβt matter if you do not have any intent or ability to carry out the threat. Merely communicating a threat is enough to warrant a felony charge. If you communicate a threat to kill, do great bodily harm, conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism in a way or form that another person can view it, you are committing a second-degree felony under section 863.10, Florida Statutes.
False reports on FortifyFL are no joke! Any false report could lead to an investigation. If it is found that any person, parent or child knowingly submitted a false tip, through FortifyFL or any other tip reporting tool, involving school or school personnelβs property, school transportation, or a school-sponsored activity, information on the device used to make the claim will be provided to law enforcement, and the person may be subject to criminal penalties.
All threats will be taken seriously and will result in severe consequences up to and including arrest, restitution, and expulsion. You are urged to discuss this issue with your children. False threats, even if intended as a joke, can result in life-altering consequences. When speaking to your child about posting on social media or falsely reporting a threat, remember to tell them... Itβs no joke!

ANCHORED 4 LIFE
During the month of January, two Anchored 4 Life Team Leaders, Georgia and Shellsea, prepared to do a REALTALK on bullying to one of the kindergarten classes. With the librarian's help, they located the book βChrysanthemumβ and reviewed it for the group. They came up with questions throughout the story for discussion and a coloring sheet superhero handout so the students could create their superhero power to βfightβ off bullies. On the big day, her partner was sick, but it did not stop our REAL TALK Team Leader, Shellsea, from continuing and doing a great job on her own. She did a great job helping them to discuss being a good friend, kindness, and standing up for others through this REALTALK activity.

FEBRUARY DATES
OUT-OF-FIELD EDUCATORS
Please see the attachment below for a list of out-of-field educators.
π½ OLD SCOOPS π½
START OF SCHOOL NOTICE
Visits- This week, Sigsbee Charter has important visitors. The Monroe County School Board of Directors was invited to tour the charter in preparation for its renewal in February. The district administration will also visit to perform the annual monitoring visit. We're excited to showcase the incredible talents and achievements of our students and staff. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire school community!
Data-Our teachers are spending time in individual meetings, reviewing progress monitoring data with the principal and our instructional coaches. We are setting learning goals for each student to ensure that everyone has support in reaching their potential by the third testing window in May. Look in last week's Scoop for directions on how to access your child's scores.
Weather- While the wind is a bit stronger than we'd prefer, we're embracing the cooler temperatures and the chance to experience a change of seasons. We're grateful to you for sending your children with and jackets, which allow them to run and play comfortably. It's a joy to see them enjoying the weather though some are ready for the return of our keys sunshine.
K-2 FAST SCORES- INFORMATION FOR CAREGIVERS
We would like to inform you about an update to the way we report student progress and proficiency for Kindergarten through second grade. The state of Florida is transitioning to the Florida Statewide Assessment (FAST) system for progress monitoring, and reports will now be accessible through the TIDE family portal.
This means you will no longer receive STAR progress monitoring reports for K-2 students. Instead, you will receive FAST progress monitoring scores, similar to what is provided for students in grades 3 and above.
Please keep in mind an important distinction between these two systems: STAR progress monitoring reflected student proficiency based on progress made so far during the school year. In contrast, FAST focuses on measuring student proficiency in relation to end-of-year grade-level standards.
We appreciate your support as we adopt this new reporting system. Please find direction on how to access your students' most recent FAST Progress Monitoring data. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your childβs teacher or our instructional coaches.
Accessing FAST test scores and report cards in Focus: To access your childβs report card in Focus -
If using the My MCSD app -
Open the app and press the More Info button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen
Then touch the Reports tab also located in the upper right corner of this screen
Then youβll see a link for the Report Card and a separate link for the Florida TIDE Family Portal which has your childβs FAST Progress Monitoring test scores.
If using the online version of Focus -
Sign in to Focus using the Focus Parent Portal Login link on our website
When you see your childβs picture with their grades listed underneath, youβll see a Reports tab to the right of their picture. Touch the Reports tab to open it.
Youβll then see Florida Statewide Assessments which is a link to that childβs Progress Monitoring test scores.
Beneath the FAST link, youβll see the link for the Report Card.

1:40-2:30pm 3rd Grade @MWR Field
MWR is off-campus (across from NEX)
Blue Court is on-campus
**games are played with whole grade levels, approximately 60 students together at once**
Grades 3/4/5 - Capture the Football
Sideline volunteers needed - supporting kids, ushering to restrooms, extra supervision
Ref volunteers needed - actively involved in the game
Water donations needed
Grades KG/1/2 - Freedom Catch
Volunteers needed - actively involved in the game, extra supervision
Please note:
Donations receive 1 volunteer hour. Grades 3/4/5 take priority for water since they will be playing off-campus away from water fountains. Donations MUST be dropped off prior to Friday, March 14th. They will not be accepted on Friday.
Any volunteer that is staying to help with the game will need to check in at the front office before participating and receive 1 volunteer hour. All volunteers MUST have a yellow visitor sticker. Volunteers HAVE to be on time (early) as I have short transition time and a strict schedule; so allow yourself time to park, sign in, and get to the correct playing area (about a 10 minute walk to MWR from campus).
If you have multiple children in different grade levels and want to be at more than one game, please indicate that when you sign up. You will receive 2 hours for the family.
I will be communicating via email. If you cannot make it after signing up, please email me so I can find a replacement.
The kids are very excited as weβve been working on these new games during PE class. I have been emphasizing sportsmanship and behavior this year, since I am heavily relying on parent volunteers. Please speak to your child about sportsmanship and respectable behavior towards peers and other adults.
CLOSED-TOED ATHLETIC SHOES should be worn as a student and a volunteer, for everyoneβs safety. Incorrect shoes could result in sitting out.
WELCOME BACK
A Message from the Principal
Happy New Year! We look forward to welcoming back our students on Tuesday. We hope you had a wonderful break and are ready to give up your family time for some learning.
We are entering the most productive learning time of the year, free from interruptions and with classes settled into routines. Please remember the importance of regular attendance. Being present in school every day is crucial for your child's academic success and personal growth. We have high expectations for your students and need them at school on time everyday and ready to learn in order to reach our goals.
Our instructional coaches and teachers are carefully dissecting state assessment data from our December assessments to determine the next steps in instruction. We want to give our students every opportunity to score well on their final assessments in May. That means purposeful and deliberate instruction over the next few months. Don't miss it!
Congratulations to our 6th graders for having the most days of perfect attendance first semester. Everyone was present on 20 school days. Fourth grade was our runner-up with 12 days of perfect attendance. We will provide monthly updates in second semester to see who can earn the title.
Thank you for being our partners in education.
Principal Jannes

JANUARY MENUS
THIS WEEK'S FESTIVITIES
All of the excitement of the holidays will be on display this week with our daily Spirit Events. Please check the calendar so your child can join in.
We expect a surprise visit from some of our holiday regulars (think holly and jolly, mean and green). Your child may come home with an onion after school on Thursday. This is one of Sigsbee's strangest traditions. In years past, the Grinch (and other fan favorites) have arrived and thrown onions to the students. In anticipation, students will not be able to dismiss early from 2:15-2:50 on Thursday as all of our Holiday security will be involved. Please plan accordingly.
Remember that Sigsbee does NOT have school on Friday, 12/20 or Monday, 1/6. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you back in 2025! The next SCOOP will come out right before we return so you can enjoy two weeks without us pestering you.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the staff holiday party. We were able to cover the expenses for all staff attending and purchase some holiday treats for everyone managing the holiday craze this year.
Don't forget that Tuesday is the last day to purchase tickets for the Big Green Egg Mini Max raffle - with all profits going to the performing arts program.

DEVICE POLICY REVIEW
We are thrilled and appreciative of how well the new personal device policy is working. Students have been very compliant. There's already a big improvement in eye contact, engagement in class and social interactions. Great job everyone! A few important reminders:
- Students do not need devices at school. Think about keeping them home and please don't text/call your students during school because their devices are supposed to be off.
- Encourage your child to LOOK UP during dismissal. They are so eager to catch up on their devices; they aren't watching traffic.
- If your child has a health plan requiring special consideration (eg. devices that monitor health conditions), please provide the doctor's instructions to Nurse Guy (nurse@sigsbee.org)
CAR LINE TIPS
FRONT LOT (K-2)
At no time may parents pull into the oncoming traffic lane to pass those waiting in car line. Unfortunately, we had several families receive tickets this week. If you want to avoid the line and park in the lot or field, you must continue down Sigsbee Road, turn right onto Felton (past the water park) and come to the school from the far side. While there are no left turns while students during arrival and dismissal windows, Felton Road remains open to 2-way traffic coming from the far side.
BACK LOT 3-8
The back parking lot is for students in grades 3-8 only. This is the case at arrival and dismissal. Any car containing children younger than third grade should come to the front.
CLASROOM PICK UP TIPS
Leave Space for the Littles
If you are picking up your child at the classroom door, please stand back and allow the classes to exit and students to gather their belongings independently. Some of the teachers have been unable to exit their classrooms because caregivers are crowding the doors.
Caregivers are not permitted inside the classrooms or hallways.
BREAKFAST ROUTINES
Cafeteria Breakfast
We are ready to welcome your chlidren to the cafeteria starting at 7:45 AM. If your child intends to buy/receive school breakfast, please try to arrive on the early side so that they can eat and proceed to class on time.
Bringing Breakfast from Home
We appreciate the importance of eating breakfast before school starts. Children should not bring breakfast (Dunkin Donuts/Starbucks) to class. If your child arrives to school and hasn't finished eating, please have them eat in the car or at the picnic tables (grades 3-8) before entering class. The fancy drinks and donuts are distracting to the classes.
SCHEDULE CHANGE REQUESTS GRADES 6-8
Class placements were created using a number of data points for returning students (and new students who provided records). The first few weeks of school allow for movement as teachers get to know students and we complete our beginning-of-year assessments. Please be patient and allow our teachers to have time with your child in class. We will work on a communication piece regarding the placement in accelerated courses.
ALL The Brass
A special thank you to the leadership team at NASKW, JIATFS and Coast Guard Sector Key West. The senior leaders all came out to greet students on the first day of school. Thank you for welcoming our Sailfish!
Building Community
The beginning of the school year is for establishing routines and building community. Let's all start with hello and a smile. Thank you to Captain Regoli and SECO Hope for modeling a morning greeting.
Working Toward Independence
Allow your students to pack their snacks, carry their belongings and enter the classrooms with their materials. Building independence now is helpful for them to feel proud and successful throughout the day.

PREPPING FOR SCHOOL: A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL JANNES
The start of the year is just around the corner and staff is busy preparing for students. We're excited to start our 15th year at Sigsbee Charter School! It's time to prepare at home as well. You can set your child up for success by establishing school routines now and consistently sticking with them throughout the year. Students thrive with consistent routines and expectations.
Begin adjusting bed times and start waking up children closer to school start time in the next two weeks. Establish morning breakfast and preparation routines so that students are comfortable BEFORE the first day. Involve your children in packing their healthy snack, lunch and preparing ice-cold filled reusable water bottles. Some families post a list on the refrigerator or front door to help students remember what they need. (One thing students will NOT need is electronic devices. Students will not be permitted to access these devices while at school this year.)
Remember: bath, book, bed for little ones. Having time to decompress and prepare for a good night's sleep is crucial. We suggest lights out no later than 8 PM. For older students, remove all electronic devices (including videogame systems) from bedrooms and establish evening environments free of social media. Our older students have a harder time waking up in the morning. They need sleep!
Attendance is a top priority for us this year. Please help us to help your child by ensuring they arrive at school prepared and on time (7:45-8:00 AM) and that they prioritize school over other activities and responsibilities. Our morning meetings prepare students for the day. When they are tardy, they are already working from a disadvantage.
Please ensure that all personal items are labeled with your child's first and last name.
We can't wait to see all of those alert and smiling faces!

MEET THE TEACHER
What is Meet the Teacher?
This is a drop by event where families and students can meet their teachers and visit the classrooms to get comfortable with the school layout. There are no formal presentations during this time (that is reserved for Back to School Night) but all staff is available for questions. Campus maps and teacher assignments will be sent out electronically the day before the event to help you navigate the campus. Staff will be available to guide you. This is NOT a drop off event. Adults should stay with their children at all times as there are several hundred people on campus at once.
How to Get a Base Pass
If you do not already have access to the base (e.g. military members, government contractors), please email a copy of your driver's license to registration@sigsbee.org so that she can prepare a base access pass for you. Include the names of your children and grade levels in your email.
Anyone who accesses campus will need a pass, even if you are not the driver. Additionally, if your child will be riding a bike or walking to school, please let Mrs. Roberts know so that she can provide a student pass. See the link below for information regarding your access priveledges.
KINDERGARTEN ROUND UP: for Incoming Kindergarten Students
What is Kindergarten Round Up?
Kindergarten Round Up is a 2-day event intended to allow our staff to meet and observe our newest sailfish. It is also an opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with the campus before everyone else returns. All incoming kindergarten students are expected to participate in both days.
Day 1: Friday, August 9th 1:00-3:00 PM
Day 2: Monday, August 12th 9:00-11:00 AM
What happens during this time?
Teachers and staff will interact with students to see how they socialize. The observation will be used to inform class placements. Students do not have an assigned kindergarten teacher during Round Up. The assignment of classes happens after the event is over.
Day 1 of Round Up
Families will meet outside and students will be lead to one of three classrooms. Parents/guardians will meet with Principal Jannes in the cafeteria for orientation. Please bring a snack, hat and water for your child; there will be outdoor play. Siblings will need to stay with their parents if attending.
Day 2 of Round Up
Parents/guardians will drop off their students and return two hours later. We will run car line for the first time so that students can get comfortable with the idea before the first day of school. Parents do NOT stay on day 2. Remember snack, water and a hat- labeled with your child's name!
Caregivers will be able to visit the kindergarten classrooms on Meet the Teacher Day.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Each family is required to provide 10 hours of volunteerism/family/year. Don't wait until spring to get your hours done. Half of them can be completed before September even hits.
Registration Completed by Deadline- 1 Hour
Kindergarten Caregiver Orientation - 2 Hours (for K families only)
Meet the Teacher- 1 Hour
New Family Orientation- 1 Hour (Kindergarten families do not need to participate)
Back to School Night 1.5 Hours
π SCHOOL SUPPLIES π
Sigsbee Charter is happy to alieve the pressure of finding school supplies on a tropical island. Most school supplies will be purchased and ready for your child when schools starts. Families are asked to purchase and label the following personal items, that are needed everyday:
- Backpack
- Reusable water bottle (filled with ice water every day- no glass)
- Lunchbox
- Headphones (see teacher's specific requests)
- Water Shoes (will need at some point)
- Combination Lock (middle school only)
Please be sure to label each item with your child's first and last name and grade level.
Parents of young children should pack a change of clothing in their child's backpack each day in case of accidents. Older students should consult the dress code to ensure they are in compliance.
π± PERSONAL DEVICE POLICY- NEW π±
We have revised our schoolβs policy regarding personal electronic devices, including cell phones and Apple watches. Starting this academic year, we will implement a no-cell-phone/personal device policy during school hours. Students may not have their devices visible or on at any time. This decision is intended to increase focus, facilitate social interactions, minimize distractions and decrease issues related to inappropriate use. Please consult our policy for details (link below). We ask that parents support their children by refraining from texting them during the school day. You may contact your child at school by calling the main office 305-294-1861.
CHECK OUT OUR NEW STAFF
A full staff list is available on our website. Teachers will update their classroom websites before Meet the Teacher.
The SCOOP
The Sigsbee Scoop is disseminated on weekends each week throughout the school year. If you do not receive the SCOOP by Sunday afternoon, please email our Enrollment Specialist, Mrs. Rosch (Leslie.rosch@sigsbee.org) to check your email address. Check your SPAM messages first as the Scoop sometimes ends up there when your computer completes a refresh. Weekly dissemination will happen starting in August.
