Erin's Law - Coming to Carlock
March 18 - 20
Erin’s Law (105 ILCS 5/10-23.13) requires the District to adopt and implement a policy addressing
sexual abuse of children that includes, among other things, an age-appropriate and evidence-
informed curriculum for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Illinois law (105 ILCS
110/3) also requires the District to provide age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness
and prevention education to students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. However, no student
in kindergarten through 8th grade shall be required to take or participate in any instruction for
recognizing and avoiding sexual abuse if the student’s parent/guardian submits written objection
and refusal to participate in the instruction (105 ILCS 5/27-13.2).
This is your minimum five-day notice that Erin’s Law child sexual abuse instruction will begin for
your child.
Written Objection(s) and/or Opt-outs
No student is required to participate in Erin’s Law child sexual abuse instruction, and no penalty
exists for refusing to take or participate in such instruction. However, students whose parents
choose not to have them participate in Erin’s Law instruction will be provided an alternative
assignment.
If you do not want your child to participate in Erin’s Law instruction, please complete the following
request and return it to your child’s classroom teacher within five school days.
IAR Testing (Grades 3rd, 4th,5th)
IAR Testing Dates March 10 - 21
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is a statewide assessment that measures students’ academic progress in reading and math. It is important for students to take the exam seriously and to do their best, as the results are used to inform instruction and help schools identify areas where students may need additional support.
The following strategies will best support your child during the exam weeks:
1. Encourage a regular sleep schedule: Make sure your child is getting enough sleep, especially the night before the test. It can be helpful to establish a regular bedtime routine in the days leading up to the assessment to ensure they are well-rested and alert. Make sure that your child arrives on time.
2. Provide a healthy breakfast or remind your student to eat at school in the AM: Eating a nutritious breakfast can help fuel your child’s brain and provide them with the energy they need to focus during the test. Consider offering whole grains, protein, and fresh fruit for a balanced meal.
3. Promote a positive attitude: Encourage your child to do their best, but also remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes. A positive attitude can help your child feel more confident and perform better on the assessment.
Thank you for your support!

5 Essentials Survey
Please help Carlock by taking the 5 Essentials Survey!
Teachers, parents, and students across Illinois have an opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
Unit 5 students in grades 4th-12th will be given the opportunity to take this survey. If you would like your student to opt out of the 5 Essentials Survey please email their teacher and fitzgeke@unit5.org (grades 4th & 5th only) by Monday, Feb. 24.
This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child's school.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the environment at your child's school. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted through Friday, March 29, 2024.
To take the survey:
1. Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/
2. Click on "Start here" under the Parent category
3. You may enter your email address but that is not required. It is completely optional.
4. Enter "McLean" for the County
5. Begin typing your child's school name and you should see it pop up. Click on the appropriate school.
Please take a separate survey for each school where you have a child enrolled.
The survey is also available in Spanish.
The Illinois 5Essentials gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
Research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools strong on at least three of these indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found on the Illinois 5Essentials Support Center ( Illinois 5Essentials Survey Questions).
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.
