Dear Middle School Families,
It was so nice to see many of you at our Parent Information Night this week. I have included the slideshow from the night in case your were unable to attend. In addition is some information about our wonderful district wide PTA. The PTA has offered support to the middle school in many ways including:
Ways PTA has supported GMHS
- funded Sam Drazen- Culture and Climate
- funded Terrizin Play
- funding to support student council initiative
- funding to the moving-on classes (8th and 12th grades)
-funded some nurses for field trips
- supported field day events
- purchased stand-up desks
- purchased furniture/materials for the middle school community center
- funded books for the GMHS library
- Celebrated our staff district-wide all year
This week, our eighth graders from our Youth Council will be attending the Regional Youth Summit. This is a unique opportunity through a grant from the Essex County Asset Builder Network. They will collaborate with middle school students from surrounding towns including Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury, and Amesbury. This will give students an opportunity to deepen their leadership skills and create opportunities to build these skills throughout the middle school. We are excited to have this unique opportunity.
Mr. Carovillano sent out information last week regarding a paternity leave for our eighth grade social studies teacher. We are currently interviewing candidates and will be sure to keep you updated once a candidate is hired.
Today during lunch we reviewed our lunch expectations and processes as we noticed that students were crowding in lines. While it did take time to review these expectations, it is important to ensure safety.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Hope Doran

Meet Our New Math Teacher Mr. Gerber
Hi. I’m Michael Gerber and I’m excited to teach Grade 8 math this year. I attended Tufts University (Biology) and UMASS Amherst (Science Education), and have been teaching middle school math and science for over 15 years. I like active and responsive classes, especially translating math into relatable activities, and finding the link between more abstract, written math and concepts students intuitively understand. I have traveled extensively, most recently in Japan but also throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. I love cooking, especially foods I learned to cook in Thailand and the Mideast, and hobbies that require thoughtful dexterity, like origami, chess, and cartooning. My wife and I have been married for 25 years this year and we have two kids just entering senior year in college. I am looking forward to a good academic year.
