April Board Meeting Recognitions
At this month's Board Meeting, we honored the remarkable accomplishments of our students and staff! Congratulations to the Hewitt-Trussville All-State Band students, as well as the HTHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Three of the HTHS All-State students were also selected as finalists at the All-State SoloFest! Our Indoor Percussion Ensemble won the SCGC Scholastic Regional A 2024 Season Championship!
We also had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Jared Meads, Principal of Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, as he delivered the State of the School Report. Mr. Meads highlighted excellence in three areas: academics, arts and athletics!
Faculty and staff were asked to nominate students from each grade level who illustrate characteristics of strong citizenship, character, academic achievement, or leadership.
Congratulations to the Students of the Month for February!
Freshmen: Marshall Smith and Capri Worsham
Sophomores: Daniel Butler and Savannah Hill
Juniors: Amberli Santiago and Wyatt Van Horn
Seniors: Alisa Nunn and Kaylee Routh
Cahaba Authors!
Cahaba Elementary offered enrichment classes to help students expand their knowledge on
interesting topics. Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Moore sponsored Cahaba Authors. In this enrichment
class each student had the opportunity to showcase their published book, read an excerpt, and
share their writing process with their families and later their classmates. Praise and
encouragement were given to each student for their hard work and creativity. This celebration
not only honored students’ achievement, but also inspired a love for reading and writing for all
who attended. These students worked hard and displayed excellent work! We are proud of our
Cahaba Authors!
Rolling Into STEM Learning at Magnolia
Students at Magnolia Elementary are rolling into STEM learning with robotics thanks to the generosity of the Trussville City Schools Foundation. Students visiting the library recently enjoyed using the following robots purchased with funds from the MUSH Grant: Sphero Mini, botley2.0, Dash, and Bolt. Additionally, students accessed the Sphero Play, Blockly, and Wonder applications utilizing ipads, also purchased with MUSH Grant funds, to code and guide the robots through a series of mazes and obstacle courses.
Thomas Bray, HTHS Junior, Honored at the State Capitol
On April 11, Thomas Bray attended a Public Speaking Seminar at the State Military Department. Thomas serves on the Alabama National Guard Youth Council, and was present for the signing of a proclamation by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. The proclamation recognized April as the Month of the Military Child. Congratulations to HTHS Junior, Thomas Bray!
Paine Students Learn about Landforms
Mrs. McGinnis' and Mrs. Payne's classes studied landforms this week. To finish off their research, they used clay to construct various landforms such as mountains, hills, islands, valleys, rivers and lakes. We have very creative first graders at Paine Elementary!
Have you heard about Neighborhood Bridges?
Neighborhood Bridges is a wonderful resource where we can post a need out into the community and our students needs can be filled by the general public. This is completely anonymous, but allows the community to have an active role in meeting the needs of TCS students. If you would like to subscribe to follow along with the needs of our kids, here is the link: https://www.neighborhoodbridges.org/community/Trussville-al
Henri Matisse Study in Magnolia Art Class
Second graders in Miss Jessica McClurg's art classes at Magnolia recently studied the artwork of Henri Matisse. According to Miss McClurg, "We focused on his artwork that primarily consisted of cut pieces of paper. The project was a challenge for students to 'draw with their scissors,' meaning there were no pencils allowed. Students selected their favorite scene to try and recreate using only scissors and colored pieces of paper." Fourth graders in Miss McClurg's art classes crafted self-portraits using collaged paper. Miss McClurg commented, "I love the creativity shown through these portraits. The students' personalities really show through their work!" Additionally, fifth-grade students created endangered animal abstract portraits using mixed media.
HTHS Engineering Academy Students Attend State Science and Engineering Fair
The HTHS Engineering Academy Senior Design team consisting of Jacob Mullinax, Sam Brooks, and Elliott Greene participated in the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair at Auburn University on March 13. The team received the Economic Impact award for their design. The team utilized the engineering design process to develop a working prototype that is capable of delivering a medical IV in the micro gravity environment of space. Their design consisted of a centrifuge to remove the air from the IV solution and a piston pump that would monitor the flow rate to provide the correct amount of the saline solution to the patient. We are so proud of how well these students represented Hewitt-Trussville High School and our Engineering Academy! Congratulations!!!
Students Excel in Principal's Reading Challenge
The "Principal's Reading Challenge" at Cahaba Elementary showcased impressive achievements and fun rewards. Kindergarten through Second Grade classes all met their "words read" goals, with Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. McDonald, and Mrs. Johnson's classes earning a sweet treat for topping their grades. Additionally, students who met the challenge enjoyed time in a bouncy obstacle course, adding an extra layer of excitement to their accomplishment. In the upper grades, participation remained strong: 71% of Third Graders met the challenge, followed by 59% in Fourth Grade, and 56% in Fifth Grade. Great job, students! We are proud of you!
