Dean's Note
Historically, our alumni award recipients are honored at the Alumni Award Luncheon associated with Alumni Week in November and this past year we added our COHS Hall of Fame induction ceremony to this week-long celebration as well. Due to staffing changes across campus, we will be moving the induction and alumni recognition to the spring. Our COHS Alumni Award recipients, Hall of Fame inductees, and Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards recipients will be showcased during an evening event.
The date has been tentatively set for April 20, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. Once we have the location confirmed, we will send out an official Save-the-Date as part of an upcoming newsletter. For now, please consider nominating someone for the COHS Hall of Fame (see details and the nomination link below).

Meet Public Health Alumna Abbi Crosby
Hi! My name is Abbi Crosby and I graduated from Georgia College with a B.S in Public Health in May of 2022. During my last semester, I completed my internship at Life Point Medical, located in my hometown of Rabun.
Once I completed my internship, I was offered a full-time position as an administrative assistant and graciously accepted. My primary job duties include numerous administrative tasks such as resolving patient issues, working with internal auditors, checking the email daily, checking/dispersing mail daily, and completing the daily billing and coding for the main office and the women's center.
I am also in charge of posting insurance payments into our EHR, along with the weekly bank deposits. Often, I am the point of contact for patients who have questions about their bills. Another task I am responsible for includes any issues regarding LabCorp, whether patient or client issues. I run errands for the office and assist the office manager with anything she may need. I am excited to expand my knowledge in the administrative field as I continue growing in my position, and I look forward to seeking my master's degree.
Life Point Medical works hard to address the challenges within our community, where the social determinants of health come into play. Dr. Beck recently purchased an X-Ray machine and had it installed in our office, so patients can get an X-Ray performed in-house. We also have a company that travels to our office to perform in-house ultrasounds for our patients.
One of the main goals of our office is to ensure that all patients receive the best care we can offer. Life Point Medical, along with the Women's Center, genuinely cares about their patients; that is what it is all about. Dr. Beck likes to say, "Enjoy life; we'll take good care of you!". I am so thankful that I get to work alongside individuals who share the passion for quality healthcare offered to their community just as I do.

ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – It’s that time of year when students head back to school.
For student-athletes, this also means back-to-sports.
As part of our “Ask the Expert” series, in partnership with Bon Secours St. Francis, 7 News Anchor Taylor Murray takes us to football practice at Wren High School where she spoke with an athletic trainer about keeping kids safe on the field.
It’s almost time for the “High School Red Zone” where stadiums at high schools across the Upstate are packed with cheering fans.
Behind every victory is a very ‘key player’— an athletic trainer.
Grant Helps Fund Sexual Assault Nursing Care
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — According to the CDC, over half of women and almost one in three men have suffered sexual violence involving physical contact in their lifetimes.
With a $980,000 grant, Georgia College hopes to provide more services to those victims.
"Our main responsibility is to provide the services necessary for those victims no matter where they're at,” says Josie Doss, the school of nursing's interim director.
She wrote the grant, and helped create the sexual assault nurse examiner program back in 2018. She says there's a great need for specialized care.
Alumna Strives to Improve Healthcare
“When providers prescribe medication without understanding the root cause, we are putting a Band-Aid® on an issue,” Oja said. “The patient may feel better, and medication can prevent diseases from progressing, but we're not addressing the root cause. If we don't understand the root cause, other symptoms and diseases can occur.”
As a result, she practices functional medicine—a quality approach in treating the whole patient with a focus on health optimization and longevity.
In 2014, Oja founded STAT Wellness as a bootcamp held in a school parking lot. Five years later, she opened her brick-and-mortar facility in West Midtown Atlanta with a different business concept of combining functional medicine and movement. In January 2022, she opened the second location in historic Roswell. Now, she’s looking for a third location with hopes of growing nationwide.
When the Atlanta STAT Wellness opened its doors in 2019, Oja taught around 16 fitness classes per week, saw about eight functional medicine patients per day, started IVs, drew patients’ bloodwork, gave B12 shots and checked patients out.
Today, 85% of her time is spent seeing patients one-on-one, writing treatment plans and helping them understand the results of their lab work.
“We're very data driven,” Oja said. “So, I don't want to just tell my patients, ‘We've reduced your inflammation.’ I want to show them, ‘This was your C-reactive protein (CRP) when we first started working together. And a year later, your CRP went from 12 to two—that’s remarkable.’”
