The Hiawatha Buzz!
September 6th, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Hiawatha Community,
We had another great week! Your kiddos are getting used to the routines and expectations. Next week we will all start (if we haven't already) earning pom poms for expected behavior in our classes and whole school. Each class has a "hive" and when their hive is full of pompoms they have a class celebration. Once we fill our whole school beehive, we will have a whole school celebration. Ask your student if they have earned a pom pom yet and what it was for.
Each month we will practice different safety drills such as fire drills, bus evacuation drills, and a relocation drill. These drills will be communicated with you all ahead of time. Next week we will have our bus evacuation drill.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
Katherine

A message from Mr. B & Mr. Lester
Happy start to the school year!! This year Mr. B and Mr. Lester will be working together in planning and delivering our Health and Wellness classes on Wednesdays. This will allow us to have a greater amount of consistency, and timeliness, when delivering instruction school-wide.
This week we focused on recess rules and expectations! Kindergartens and First Graders reviewed recess expectations and each student drew a picture of a recess expectation.
Grades 2 and 3 reviewed 4-square and soccer rules in order to have these activities as options at recess.
We are looking forward to a great year ahead!
Mr. B and Mr. Lester
Message from Mrs. Safer in Music
We’re off to a great start in music! We’re getting to know each other and looking forward to a wonderful year of singing, moving, exploring and creating! As we begin the year, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will learn many new songs, games and movement activities to help them work together and build their musical skills. Students in Grades 2 will focus especially on singing and steady beat, which will prepare them for ensemble work. Third graders will dive back into rhythm and take on new musical challenges like singing rounds and playing ensemble instruments.
Outside the music room… I want to let you know about a special opportunity for students who love to sing! The Greater Burlington Children’s Chorus offers children from Grades 1-6 a place to sing and develop their musical skills in a fun, welcoming environment. Rehearsals for the fall semester will take place on Mondays from 4:00-5:15 beginning on September 23. As the chorus director I’m so pleased that students in our area have a place to expand their musical horizons and experience the joy of music. If you’d like more information, please feel free to email me at ksafer@ewsd.org or visit the GBCC website at https://www.greaterburlingtonchildrenschorus.org/.

Heavenly Pantry update
The Heavenly Food Pantry, located at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Essex
Junction, will be open to residents of Essex, Essex Junction and Westford on Monday,
September 9, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Beginning at 5:30, families arriving will be given a number, where they will wait in the sanctuary for their number to be called. They will then be registered and guided to the food pantry, where a volunteer will greet and escort them around, allowing them to make selections of their choosing. After food is gathered, it will be weighed (information for pantry use only) and another volunteer will bring the food to the family’s vehicle. Shopping carts will be made available for those within walking distance of the pantry.
Face masks are optional for those entering the food pantry to ensure safety for visitors as well as volunteers.
As usual, there are no income requirements to visit the food pantry and a variety of food is available to everyone; however, additional food is provided by the USDA once a month to eligible persons who fall below federally mandated guidelines.
Those not able to attend the pantry may call the Church office at 878-5745 between 9:00 a.m.
and noon today or Monday to leave contact information (name, address, number of family members, phone number) so arrangements for delivery can be made. Follow-up calls to complete registration and schedule deliveries will be made Monday morning.
Families are currently able to visit the pantry each time it is open-on the 2nd Monday of the month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and the 4th Thursday of the month from 3:00-6:00 p.m. (except for November and December when it is the 3rd Thursday).
The next food pantry distribution will occur on Thursday, September 26 from 3-6 p.m.
