Lawson's Latest
Dear Hillsboro Online Academy Families,
I hope this message finds you well! As we head off into Fall in the beginning of a new school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic start we’ve had together.
It was wonderful to meet so many of you during our orientations, and seeing our students at the in-person activities has truly brought our community to life. Your enthusiasm and support make a significant difference, and we’re thrilled to have such engaged families in our program. If you are interested in joining our K-8 Parent group, please fill out this form.
We’re excited to partner with you as we navigate this school year together, and we look forward to working collaboratively to support our students’ learning and growth. Please enjoy some pictures from the first days of school for our whole K-12 program.
Here’s to a successful and enriching school year ahead! We can’t wait to see what’s in store.
Warm regards,
Shannon Lawson
K-12 Administrator
Password Reset Process
Tech Services has updated their questions to be more accessible for students and staff.
5th-12th graders should enroll into self service password management and reset their passwords during the month of September to avoid expired passwords and possible interruptions to learning and testing.
Student instructions are available on the student tech support website in English and Spanish.
Monitoring Student Progress
Using your Canvas Parent Observer account, you can view activity for your student's courses; view their submitted, missing and graded assignments on the Grades page; and set alerts using the iOS or Android app!
Messaging through Canvas is also a quick and easy way to get in touch with teachers! If you have more than one student enrolled with HOA, you can link them all to your one Observer account! If you have any questions, please reach out to our staff!
School Pictures (K-8)
Dorian will be at Tamarack on Monday, October 7 for our K-8 Picture Day between 9:30 AM-1:30 PM! You can scan the QR code to place your order online up to four (4) days after picture day!
High school students that missed pictures on September 4 are able to get their photos taken for their ID card. Please check in at the front desk with Mrs. Webb.

Immunizations
Oregon state law requires that students have received appropriate vaccinations for school entry. To view the State of Oregon’s complete list of Immunization and Dosage Requirements, click here.
Kindergartners and other students new to the District will not be allowed to start school without the required immunizations.
School administrators are required to exclude from school those students not having proof of at least one dose of each of the above-noted immunizations. The only exceptions are those children who have health problems that would prevent them from receiving the inoculations and those whose religious teachings oppose immunizations.
Immunization Exclusion Day
Annual date designated by the State Health Department - when students without complete immunizations or exemptions are sent home and not allowed to return to school until the requirements are completed.
Beginning March 1, 2014, there is a new process parents must follow to claim a non-medical exemption and opt out of required immunizations for school. Senate Bill 132A requires that parents who would like to claim non-medical exemptions must submit a document showing either:
- A signature from a health care provider verifying discussion of the risks and benefits of immunization, or
- A certificate of completion of an interactive online educational video about the risks and benefits of immunization.
Information about the new regulations is provided on the Oregon Health Authority's website.
Getting Immunizations
Immunizations may be obtained from your medical provider. You can also visit the District's school-based health center, located on the Century High School campus. In addition, the Washington County Health & Human Services (HHS) Department operates several clinics that offer a variety of services, including immunizations. Please visit the Washington County HHS web site or contact them at (503) 846-4955 for more information about services and locations.
Messages from the District Nurses
Orthopedic Injuries
Hello HSD Families,
Happy start of the school year. Students are often participating in sports and other activities that could lead to an orthopedic injury. Our District Nurse Team wanted to reach out and give you a quick update on our orthopedic injury return to school plan!
An orthopedic injury can range from minor sprains to broken bones or even surgeries. Please be sure to let the office staff at the school know right away about any orthopedic injury that occurs during the year or planned surgery your child may have. Please be sure to let the office staff know of any accommodations or restrictions that are required when they return to school. Your district nurse may be following up with you and your student depending on any safety concerns.
If your student was seen by a medical provider, then a copy of the orders would be appreciated and needed if there are activity restrictions for your student, especially weight bearing status. A copy of the chart notes or discharge information is adequate, but sometimes we need an actual order or note from the medical provider to return to previous activities.
If your student is returning to school with crutches or a wheelchair, then the District Nurse and school Physical Therapist may need to be involved and medical provider orders will most likely be needed related to specific activity restrictions.
Our goal is that students stay injury free. Sharing our process with you and staff ensures that your students have a smooth transition back to school in the event of returning to school after an orthopedic injury.
Thank you,
Hillsboro School District Nurse Team
Sunscreen Memo
Notice to families
In accordance with ORS 339.874, students are permitted to wear sun-protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors. Non-prescription sunscreen may be family provided and student carried without medication authorization forms. Hillsboro School District has a limited quantity of SuperGoop SPF 30 mineral sunscreen (15.7% zinc oxide) this school year. When available, this may be dispensed to students in need during sunny outdoor activities unless parents/guardians indicate otherwise in advance.
Traveling outside North America?
Being an online school family has its advantages when it come to traveling! Students that have HSD Chromebooks and plan on traveling outside North America are asked to contact our school office to let us know about your travel plans so we can notify the Technology Support Department. If you have any questions, please visit the Student Tech Support website, call 503-886-8956 and leave a message, or email techhelp@hillsboro.incidentiq.com
Please complete Online Verification
Verifying your student information is very important for parents/guardians to complete each year for their currently enrolled student(s) in the Hillsboro School District. Having accurate contact information for parents is critical for communicating school and district news, as well as attendance and emergency notifications. Online verification allows you to update information such as:
- Address and contact information
- Emergency contacts
- Parent/student relationship information
- Vaccination information
- Digital resources consent form (important to continue student use of digital resources such as Google Classroom)
- Family Income Survey (can be completed for a reduction in some district fees)
You will need a ParentVUE account and access to a computer or mobile device.
Don't have a ParentVUE account? Contact your student's school for an activation key. Additional ParentVUE information can be found here.
