Crohn's Disease
Period 5 - Tina Lall and Krystine Rosado
Description
Symptoms
Causes
It is caused by a combination of environmental immune issues and bacterial factors in genetically susceptible individuals. The body's immune system attacks the GI tract, possibly directed at microbial anti gens.
- Higher risk in smokers
-Ages: Between 15 and 30 years of age.
-Genetic components
-Microbes ( Weakened mucosal layer ) + inability to clear bacteria from intestine walls.
Diagnosis
Tests:
-Blood protein levels
-Blood sedimentation rates
-Body mineral levels
-Red blood cell counts
-Stool samples to check for blood or infectious microbes
-White blood cell counts
It's also based on family history and a physical exam test.
Treatment
Since Crohn's disease is an immune system disease, it can't be cured by medications or surgery. Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and other medications to help reduce inflammation and other infections.
Surgery may be required if prescribed drugs do not work.
Prognosis
Some patients may experience only one episode and others suffer continuously.
13% to 20% of people have chronic Chron's disease.
If treated, most people begin to live a healthy life style with the morality rate of the disease relatively low. However, it can vary from person to person. Most people with Crohn's Disease live a normal life span.
