Classical Corner: Listening and Learning
Dear Families,
As the snow rolls in, a team of ERA teachers rolls out. Yes, we are feeling a little guilty that we are leaving Snowmageddon behind, but we are thrilled for what awaits us at the National Symposium for Classical Education. Each year, ERA sends a team of teachers to this national conference, and each year teachers return moved by its Classical offerings. This year, the main sessions are sure to inspire all with titles ranging from The Essential Impulse of Hope to The Redemptive Influence of Beauty, from The Cultural Energy of Schools to Recovering Virtue in an Age of Values. Featured panels tackle the challenges facing Classical education today, the cultivation of hearts and minds, and practical ways to bring Plato’s educational philosophy into the classroom. For breakout sessions, experts in their field offer engaging sessions covering academic, virtue, and leadership topics K-12. Our agendas are full, but here are just some of the sessions our ERA teachers are most looking forward to:
- Anne Bartow (2nd grade): Diagramming Buffalo (for teaching Grammar); Masters of the Renaissance: Teaching the Arts through Story
Chris Ward (5th grade): Bringing the Bard Forth; Paper and Pen: What the Research Says
Suzannah Toso (K-2): Philosophy for Children: Getting started with Socratic Discussion; Declamation for Today; Build Mathematical Virtue, Not Just Skills
Jessica Bergeron (SoL/R Latin): Who Killed Latin?; The Trivium as a Framework for Teaching Latin and Modern Languages
Lisa Johnson (SoR Art): Essentials of Drawing: Studying the Masters
While we are eager to attend these sessions, we are even more eager to share all that we learn with the ERA community. Stay tuned for more lessons in Classical education from our 2023 symposium attendees!
Sincerely,
Suzannah Toso

Schools of Logic & Rhetoric News
Congratulations to our Fall 2022 Olympus Club Members! - Missy Madigan, Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Assistant Principal
Dear Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Families,
On behalf of Principal Erin Johnson and myself, we would like to congratulate the students listed below for being admitted into the Fall 2022-23 Olympus Club.
Admittance into the Olympus Club appropriately reflects the endless hours these students have spent securing a 2022-23 first semester grade point average of a 3.33 or above, along with embodying the CIPHER pillars on a daily basis. Olympus Club recognition is more than an honor roll, it also acknowledges students who display The Gryphon Way through a commitment toward attendance (fewer than 3 tardies all semester) and behavior (fewer than 3 pillar referrals, no detentions or infractions).
Our scholars have been recognized in grade-level assemblies and presented with a certificate suitable for framing. They are permitted to wear spirit wear during the three days of finals.
Congratulations!
Mrs. Madigan
