Beverages for Children
Thankfully, the best-choice beverages are really simple: water and plain milk. Plain water provides the hydration all of us need to live. Milk provides calcium, vitamin D, protein, vitamin A, and zinc―all essential for healthy growth and development.
How do young children develop unhealthy beverage preferences?
We know children who drink mostly water and plain milk from a young age tend to continue drinking them as they age. But we also know, bad habits form early. Young children who are introduced to sweet drinks at a young age develop a strong preference for them―making water and plain milk a harder sell. PS: The same goes for food preferences.

Making the Most of the First Five
With families in so many directions in a day, it can be difficult to find time to connect with one another. A simple way to build good family connections, even with limited time, is to make the first five minutes that a person comes home be about those connections. Here is how to make that five minutes strengthen the family.
Put Devices Down – when the parent or child comes home, put phones, tablets, laptops, etc. down and put the TV on mute.
Check In – Greet each other and ask about the day. Share a little about your day in a way that your child can understand (especially when it was not a good day for you) and help them talk about their day.
Listen – When your child shares about their day, this is an important time just to listen and not try to change their view point on their day or fix something that might be wrong unless they ask for help. Give them time to just be heard and have conversations on what to do about it later.
Affection – Offer your child affection during this time, especially younger children. This might be a hug, a fist bump, hold their hand, or a compliment.
Start Early – Setting the first five as a routine in your home when your children are younger, this will be easier to keep connected to them as they get older.
