Today we celebrated November’s recognitions and challenges in our monthly assembly. Congratulations to all of the students who were recognized for the FMS Academic or Triple Pillar Award. The winners for November’s Citizenship Challenge were Ms. Gagnon’s, Ms. Sewall’s, and Mr. Hay’s classes! These homerooms “took home” the trophies & falcons to their classrooms. December’s challenge is a letter writing/winter greeting campaign. Our hope is to have the students write as many letters/cards as they can to local senior citizens. These greetings will then be delivered to our local senior centers, spreading light and cheer to our elders.
We have had two new additions to our monthly assemblies. The first of which was Artist of the Month. Shout out to those students who were identified for their exemplary artwork representing the “people who stick by me.” The second addition was an attendance challenge where we are recognizing the homeroom in each grade with the best attendance for the month. Congratulations to Mr. Dean’s, Ms. Heath’s, and Ms. Gerrish’s classes for winning the attendance challenge for November! They will proudly display the falcon alarm clocks in their classrooms for the month.

FROM NURSE RICKI
We have been experiencing increased illness this Fall and we are headed into the winter season when Flu arrives as well. This is happening nationwide as we come out of the pandemic. Good hygiene practices and developing healthy habits will help.
Here are some ways we can stay healthy this winter.
Reinforce good hand washing. Handwashing is the number one way to fight germs. It is important to teach children to wash their hands, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
Cough and sneeze into their sleeves or a tissue and dispose of properly. If your child has a cough/cold encourage them to cover their cough.
Clean your screens! Screens carry lots of germs on them. As we use them more and more, they can be a source of infection.
Get vaccinated.
Stay home if your child has a fever (100.4 or greater) or vomiting. May return when fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication and 24 hours vomiting free.
Encourage healthy habits- 9-12 hours of sleep for this age group. Regular exercise. Drinking water. Eating healthy - increase fruits and veggies and decrease sugar and processed foods.
We are experiencing high levels of Strep Throat.
While there are many illnesses that cause a sore throat. If you suspect Strep Throat,
get your child tested.
Pertussis( whooping cough) has increased in Maine this Fall and often appears like a common cold. Fisher Mitchell has not had any cases. This commonly includes runny or stuffy nose, low-grade fever, and mild occasional cough. One to two weeks after symptoms start, paroxysms, also known as coughing fits, may develop. Coughing fits this stage of illness can last up to 10 weeks, but usually lasts between 1 to 6 weeks. The cough generally gets worse and becomes more frequent during this stage of illness. Coughing fits can cause people to make a high-pitched, “whoop” when they inhale after a coughing fit, vomit during or after coughing fits, but may seem well in-between fits, have difficulty sleeping at night due to increased night-time coughing fits. People feel very tired after the fit but may seem well in-between fits. Those who experience these coughing fits may say it is the worst cough of their life. Children are vaccinated for pertussis, and boosters are given when children are near or at 11 years old which helps to reduce the risk.
Be healthy,
Nurse Ricki
