Superintendent Report
While at this event, she was invited and honored to speak on a panel, entitled Protecting the Frontline Against Attacks on Student Centered Programs, where she shared her ongoing work toward improving an inequitable educational system by supporting administrators and teachers and staff through Equity work, Ethnic Studies, LGBTQ+ protections, and more. She thanked the District's Executive Cabinet team for their support during her absence.
She gave a shout-out to the District's Student Advisory Council always bringing such positive energy to this past Monday's meeting and appreciates their hard work.
AFT Local 1481 Report
American Federation of Teachers Local 1481 Union President Monica Casey mentioned that negotiations are still taking place, as the District's negotiating team met last week to review a first interim budget report. She reminded everyone that this negotiation is for five contracts, three years, and that better working conditions create better students learning conditions.
This past weekend, she attended a CFT (California Federation of Teachers) conference in Southern California where she learned about best practices for bargaining contracts and how to grow union leadership within JUHSD; she appreciates the District's openness to the expanding this.
She reminded all AFT Local 1481 Members to regularly check their website for updated info. She is also looking for a member to support her with social media posts, including those made to Instagram.
Student Trustee Reports
Jefferson High Student Trustee Nathalia Alvarado shared that the school's Mission Fusion program held their first rehearsal with Terra Nova High, as this will be the first year in which the combined programs host a show together opening this Thursday in the JHS Little Theater. She also noted that JHS recently held a no-name calling week. For sports, the school's soccer team is doing well this season with a recent win against San Bruno's Capuchino High School.
Terra Nova High Student Trustee Caterina Sardo announced that rehearsals have started for Shrek, the school's spring musical. She shared that the girls soccer team recently won a game against Capuchino High School, placing them in second for the county league. The school's ASB Leadership recently hosted a schoolwide blood drive and their annual winter formal dance; both events were a huge success!
Westmoor High School Trustee Charlotte Tsang reported the school recently held its winter ball on January 20 with everyone in attendance having fun! For Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, and Black History Month, campus clubs plan to host student activities, along with the student government program hosting a blood drive and food fair. She shared that the school is examining different bell schedule options for next school year. The school's FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) will take part in a local tournament on February 10.
January Student of the Month Honored
Chloe May, Oceana High School
As read OHS Principal Maritza Torres at the January 30 meeting:
Chloe May possesses a combination of attributes that is rare among adults but absolutely extraordinary when considering she is still in high school. Chloe has the ability to sit patiently and let in the information before taking her time to carefully assess the data, and then, react. However, when she reacts she does so with a careful calmness that let’s one know that they are in the best of hands.
Chloe's intellectual capability and commitment to excellence were evident early on. As a freshman in mock trial, she distinguished herself as a remarkable attorney. Not only did she exhibit a profound understanding of legal concepts, but she also demonstrated a relentless pursuit of improvement. Chloe's skill for questioning and her dedication to refining her skills were truly commendable. Last school year, Chloe was an attorney for Mock Trial and helped propel the team to the Semifinals. Her careful thinking, calm demeanor, quick responsiveness, and her deep intellectual insight made her a powerful attorney. However, it is not only on Mock Trial that you can see this. Chloe's intellectual gifts and careful approach make her a powerful thinker, speaker, and change-maker in every context. And all of this is coupled with a deep compassion for others. Simply put, Chloe is amazing.
During her junior year, Chloe achieved the unprecedented position of ASBC Vice President. This remarkable accomplishment underscored her leadership skills and ability to inspire her peers. Currently, Chloe serves as the Oceana High School Associated Student Body Congress President, a role she executes with unparalleled diligence. In addition to overseeing class officers and commissioners, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the school community through her editorial responsibilities for the Oceana’s weekly newsletter, Shark Bytes. Every week, Chloe seeks out information to put on the newsletter and creates content, such as flyers, to better communicate to the Oceana community.
Chloe's leadership extends beyond the school. As the San Mateo County Mental Youth/Behavioral Health Co-Chair, she actively contributes to monthly youth committee meetings, fostering a youth-centric approach to mental health advocacy. Her dedication to increasing mental health literacy and empowering youth communities to address mental disorders is very impactful.
Furthermore, Chloe serves on the Pacifica Youth Advisory Board, offering a valuable teen perspective on issues facing the City of Pacifica. This involvement reflects her commitment to civic engagement and her ability to collaborate effectively with adults in addressing real-life challenges.
Chloe's volunteer work is a testament to her commitment to community service. From her role as a Clinical Lab Specimen Collection and Management Volunteer at San Francisco General Hospital to her dedication as a tutor with Healthy Cities Tutoring, Chloe consistently goes above and beyond to make a positive impact. Her participation as an election volunteer in the US Primary and General Elections showcases her firsthand engagement in the democratic process, further highlighting her civic responsibility.
In her ongoing volunteer role at the SF Marin Food Bank, Chloe has contributed to promoting community service programs and enhancing operational efficiency. Her dedication to creating positive change is evident in the diverse tasks she undertakes, from sorting and distributing food to organizing facilities.
Obviously, there are many things that can and have been said about why Chloe May is student of the month. But, there is one more example. This year for her Senior Exhibition project, Chloe chose to analyze how the Supreme Court interprets the religion clauses of the 1st Amendment and how the current court's interpretation has changed. One of Chloe’s teachers shared that the conversations that they’ve had with Chloe this year about her topic are always a delight. She asks questions, then they ask her questions in return and they consider the perspectives they might be missing. When people talk with Chloe it's an intellectual exercise. She is passionate about learning and clearly an excellent choice for student of the month.
Chloe is an amazing young adult and we are excited to congratulate her on being selected as Jefferson Union High School District’s January Student of the Month.
