Principal Cassidy's Corner - Week 1 Wrap Up
We had such a wonderful first week of school! There are always some kinks to work out, such as schedules, learning where our classrooms are located, remembering our bus route, and navigating just being a middle school student. I hope that your child feels as good about the first week as our school team. We are already diving into teaching and learning. Laptops distribution will be today, Monday, and Tuesday. We will start giving academic assessments to determine what each student needs to grow and succeed this year. HBMS is in full swing and we are excited about all that we will accomplish this year!
At the bottom of this newsletter, every week, you will see the section that says, "Who can I contact for help?" We encourage families to reach out to us with questions and concerns. A partnership between the school staff and families is critical to ensuring success. Our team looks forward to working with you to support each child to learn and grow to their full potential!
Have a wonderful weekend!
iReady Assessments - Fall Screener
Next week we will give the iReady math diagnostic, and the following week the iReady reading diagnostic. These assessments give us current information about your child's present levels in math and reading and help us to make decisions about class placements and additional learning supports or advancements. Please discuss the importance of giving BEST effort on the assessments. The Family Guide is attached if you would like additional information.
Wednesday, August 14: Math Assessment
Wednesday, August 21: Reading Assessment
After the assessments, each week students will need to complete one teacher-assigned math lesson and one teacher-assigned reading lesson. Teachers will choose the lessons based on current learning in math and ELA classes. These iReady lessons count as a grade for the math and ELA courses. Students have time every day during 4th period to complete their assigned lessons, and they can also access the system at home if needed.
Missing Assignment Emails - changes this year!
Beginning next week, on Thursday, August 15, our automated weekly "Missing Assignments" emails will begin. If your child has not turned in an assignment and it is flagged as "Missing" in the gradebook, you will receive an automated email notification. Missing assignments hold a score of "zero" in the gradebook and are detrimental to a student's overall grade. You can also view assignments flagged as missing at any time in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
NEW rules for Missing/Late work this school year:
- Late/missing assignments will only be accepted for credit until the final assessment for that unit of study is given.
- Missing assignment emails will not repeat prior notifications. For example, if you receive an email about Missing Assignment "1" this week, that same assignment will not be included in an email on the following week if it is still not turned in. Only assignments flagged as "missing" since the last email will appear in the notification.
- The teacher is the first point of contact about a missing assignment.
2024 Milestones Scores
Milestones scores from spring 2024 are now available to view in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Please note that the state has not yet released Milestones math scores. We anticipate receiving these in September.
How to view scores in Infinite Campus:
- Login to the Campus Parent/Student Portal.
- Select "More", then "Assessments".
- Select the Assessment you wish to view (you will see Access, Milestones, and other district and state assessments).
- The screen will list the date and score for the assessment.
Procedures for dropping off student items at school
We know that sometimes students forget important items at home. If parents are able to bring the items to school, we want you to be aware of our procedures for delivering items to students. These procedures help us protect instructional time, which is why we are at school - to learn!
- Students are not permitted to order food delivery to the school (such as Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc.). Items that are ordered by students will be discarded.
- Parents may bring food to the school for students. We only allow students to eat parent-provided meals during their designated lunch period. We will only provide food to students if the parent delivers it (please do not send food delivery services to the school for your child, as they will be discarded).
- Students will not be called out of class to pick up items. Parents will label the item with the student's name and grade. We have a designated area for forgotten items that students can check during class transitions and their lunch period. The only exceptions are emergency items such as eye glasses or medication.
Thank you for helping us to protect learning time! If you need us to get an emergency message to the school, please call the front desk as soon as possible (such as a change in afternoon transportation).

Hall Lockers
Lockers will be distributed to students during the second week of school.
About locker rentals:
- Locker locations are assigned based on grade level.
- Students should NEVER share a locker or provide their combination to other students. This is for security of valuable personal items, such as cell phones.
- Access to lockers is limited during the school day. Each grade designates times for students to access lockers.
- Lockers are school property; school administration may, at any time for any reason, inspect a locker without student consent.
Lockers can be purchased in person at the front office during arrival time or lunch the first two weeks of school. Parents can also pay online on our school website.
Breakfast/Lunch Prices
It is important to note that meals will NOT be free for all students this school year.
A new application must be completed every school year. Only one application is required per family, even if your children attend different schools. If there is an interruption in benefits or the household does not reapply, the household is responsible for payment of meals until the Free and Reduced Application is approved. Visit www.fulton.schoollunchapp.com to begin the online application process.
Students who qualified for Free/Reduced meals last school year will continue eligibility through September 18. After this date, parents must pay for meals unless a new application is submitted and approved for the current school year.
Students who qualify for Reduced meal eligibility will receive FREE meals this year!
Charges are not allowed in middle/high school. Students with no money to pay for meals may be given a courtesy meal. Breakfast - cheese toast/milk; lunch - cheese sandwich/milk.
2024-25 Meal Prices
Middle School Student Breakfast = $1.35
Middle School Student Lunch = $2.85
Extra Milk = $0.75

Student Cell Phones -FCS Guidelines
One of the biggest distractions from learning that we deal with daily is students using cell phones during the school day. Please review the district guidelines below and talk to your child about the consequences of misusing a cell phone while at school. We will be strictly enforcing these expectations and may confiscate phones as necessary.
We strongly recommend that students leave cell phones at home. If it is necessary for your student to bring the phone to school, it is recommended to secure phones in a locker during the school day; if a student does not have a locker the phone should be kept in the backpack during the school day. The school is not responsible for the loss or damage of students' personal devices while at school.
Key Cell Phone Details:
- Students may access their phones during their regular lunch and recess periods.
- Students may not use their phones take photos or videos while on school property without permission from the administration. This includes the lunch/recess period.
- Phones should remain out of sight/in locker during all other times of the school day.
- We have phones available for student use in the case of emergency during the school day.
- Possession of Personal Communication Devices (PCD) (e.g., cell phones, tablets, recording devices) by a student at school during school hours is a privilege that will be forfeited if a student fails to abide by the Student Code of Conduct.
