Middle School 101

Before we get started, it is important that you know and understand some commonly used words and middle school lingo. We also want to show you a typical 6th grade schedule via the link below.


Core Classes = Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies

Encore Classes = Art, PE, Spanish, Chorus, Band, CTE

Semester = half a school year

LEAD = a class to learn and practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, build community, and grow your leadership skills

Health and PE

In sixth grade physical education classes, students learn about health and fitness, and participate in different sports and games. Activities and games should promote cardiovascular health, flexibility, muscular strength, coordination and endurance.


Every student takes a Health/PE class each year.

Band

One of the most exciting electives 6th graders can register for is the Cavalier Beginning Band.


Regardless of your knowledge of music, this class is the first step to be involved in the Band program at W.C. Friday and all the exciting adventures that it entails.

Chorus

Come join the WCF Chorus Program! We pride ourselves on choral excellence in, both, learning to read music as well as performing and enhancing our skills as young musicians. Here, you’re free to express yourself through your gifts and talents, as well as learn to enhance them.

Art

In 6th grade, students dive into the basics of art learning about and using different art mediums. Students will create masterpieces based on the elements of art and works from around the world.


You don't have to be an amazing artist to join art. Art if for those who want to learn and are willing to try. We belive everyone can be an artist and everyone brings their own creativity to the table .


*Art is a SEMESTER long class

Spanish

Exploratory Spanish is an introduction to the 21 countries of the Spanish-Speaking world and learning the vocabulary for basic communication and speaking.


Topics will include:


  • Greetings
  • Colors
  • Months & Days
  • Weather
  • Classroom Words
  • Expressions
  • Hispanic traditions
  • Hispanic Holidays/Celebrations

CTE

Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners.


CTE classes are hands on and engaging. Students typically love CTE classes and learn skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.

Cavalier SPORTS

Download the NC Sports Physical Form: HERE
  • Students must turn in a completed physical form prior to trying out. Sports physicals are valid for a full calendar year.

Complete the Sports Interest Form for EARLY Fall sports sign ups: HERE

  • Early Fall sports are golf, cheer-leading, and softball.
  • Information and sign ups for other sports will be shared later on in the school year.

WC Friday CLUBS

All students participate in 1 of over 30 clubs. Clubs once a month for one hour during the school day. Clubs are designed to offer students the opportunity to learn new topics and serve others. Examples of clubs are: Project Unify Club, Battle of the Books, Hiking Club, Card/Gaming Club, Sign Language Club, Cooking Club, PenPal Club, Knitting Club, Kindness Club and MORE. Students are given the opportunity to sign up for clubs at the beginning of the year.


We encourage all students to get involved and to give back. All students also participate in service learning. Students design and implement a service project of their choice in their LEAD class. Fridays during LEAD are service days. We can't wait to see all of the great service projects the Class of 2027 comes up with!
