Monday Morning Bearcub Brief
Volume CXX--9 December 2019
"Every CUB stepping up, reaching out, moving forward!"
Kleb Kudos
First, a huge shout out to all staff who were involved in a successful Personalized Learning site visit last week! Thank you to the teachers who volunteered their time to be a part of the teacher panels (Ms. Rivera, Mr. Tice, Ms. Jackson, Ms. Hatchett, Ms. Layton, Ms. Broadnax, Mr. Smart, Ms. Gonzalez, Ms. Smith and Ms. Sharp). A huge thank you as well to those who opened their classrooms so that EdElements and our district admin could see the amazing things happening here (Ms. Mallet, Ms. Laubach, Ms. Blanchard, Ms. Siger, Ms. Hendrix and Ms. Nichley). The whole site visit team was impressed with the outstanding work we do here at Kleb Intermediate!
Huggins Highlights
Teachers, don't forget that this week starts our final exams for Bearcubs in high school credit courses. Also, Friday, 12/13 will be the music department's annual Elementary Holiday Tours, so be mindful that many students in band, choir and orchestra will be out that day.
Parents and teachers, a second semester save-the-date: this year's spring open house event is being reinvented as a Course Selection Night/Elective Fair! It will take place on Thursday, January 23rd following the 5th grade parent meeting. More information to come soon!
Parents, in case you missed it in the call out last Friday, we have decided as a campus to align our cell phone/head phone policy to match our majority feeder, Klein High School, at the beginning of spring semester. Students will now be required to put away cell phones and headphones before entering the classroom each period, and will not be allowed to use them during instructional time. They can still use phones before and after school, at lunch, and briefly during passing periods. Please help us have this conversation with your Bearcubs at home. As always, if you need to get in touch with your student you can call the front office, any of the grade level offices or attendance and we can send for them. Thank you for supporting our effort to provide an excellent learning environment for our Bearcubs.
With only two weeks left before winter break our 2nd IXL Challenge has officially started! IXL is a personalized learning platform that allows students to work through math skills over a range of topics directly tied to classroom learning. For this challenge, students are asked to complete 3 skills with at least an 80% smart score by December 18th. Each specific skill is determined by their teacher, can be found on their Schoology page, and is hanging in their classrooms for reference. At the end of the two week challenge students will receive a prize for the completion of their skills. We hope that this and future challenges will keep students practicing the necessary skills they need for continued growth.
Finals Schedule
December 11th- DDMP (p.2), TSDE (p.2), PIT (p.1), GWC (p.2)
December 12th- Art 1, Gateway to STEM, PHS

December 18th- Spanish 1 & 2 (p.2), Algebra/Geometry (p.2), Health (p.2)
We are still looking for WATCH D.O.G.S.!® This is an innovative program focusing on education and safety in schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose:
1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, male guardians and uncles are asked to spend at least one day at their student’s school volunteering. They will support the school through:
monitoring the school property, working one-on-one or in small groups, reading, helping with work, listening ears, or whatever else needs to be done to PLANT SEEDS OF SUCCESS in the lives of the students.

Kleb Teacher of the Week--Kelly McDonald-- Choir Director
I am nominating Kelly for kindness, leadership, and empathy because she is an outstanding choir director that always puts the students first. She creates a positive learning environment that allows students to be themselves and be the best that they can be. We are lucky and blessed to have such an amazing director like Mrs. McDonald!
-Mr. Tesoro
Cubs of the Week
Nicolas Schatz--6th
Nicolas has shown to be a selfless and a "we not me" kind of guy. He took it upon himself to not only welcome a new student but be their mentor, and help our new Bearcub to be the very best!
Angad Dhingra--7th
Eleanor Alberts--8th
Eleanor is a goal oriented problem solver that is self-reflective and self-disciplined. She is one of the hardest working students in our class and we are so proud to be her teachers.

Parent Reminder--Dismissal Procedures
Car Riders
Car rider parents will turn on Lyons School Road from either Louetta Road or Stuebner-Airline. Parents will enter at the north entrance to the Klein High School student parking lot. Look for the sign. Parents will then form two lanes along the curb, up until the sign indicating the stopping point. When your student arrives, a staff member will direct you to exit past the band and to the right so that you can exit through the south exit of the parking lot. If your student will not be immediately ready to be picked up after school, parents will need to park in one of the parking spots to wait for their child. If you do park in a parking spot to wait for your child, use extreme caution when backing out of the parking space. Students have been instructed to cross to the Klein High parking lot at the cross walk with an employee. See the image below for an aerial view.
As a reminder, there is no afternoon pickup at the front of the school due to the potential safety issue as traffic backs up onto Louetta. Thank you again for understanding our need to keep our Bearcubs safe.
Bus Riders
The first round of buses will be dismissed promptly at 4:25 after a last call for those buses has been made in the cafeteria. Once the first bus begins to roll, for student safety, no student will be allowed to enter the bus lot or get on a bus. After the first bus has started to depart, there is no way to communicate with the driver and it is unsafe for students to be in the bus lot. After the first round of buses has been dismissed, the second round of buses will be called as they arrive and will depart as soon as they have been loaded.

Attendance Counts
Did you know you can now report an absence in Skyward? Click HERE for more information.
Any student who is absent for the whole day is required to produce one of the following within 5 days of their absence(s):
- Parent Note
- Parent email (within 5 days of absence)
- Original medical note (copies or altered notes will not be accepted)
- Faxed notes must be sent from physician’s office
- Court note

***If a student is absent for part of the day for a doctor appointment, their absence will be coded as Section 25 (temporary absence) if the student follows the following procedure: The student must return the doctor excuse to the Attendance Office immediately upon returning to school to receive the Section 25 coding for their absence.
If a student does not produce one of the items listed above within the allotted timeframe, that absence will be considered unexcused and counted toward their total semester absences.
Klein ISD takes attendance very seriously, and we want to see your child succeed at Kleb. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please feel free to contact the attendance office or your assistant principal.
