Pirates Post
Week of December 6th
Message from Principal Drew...
We ONLY HAVE 5 DAYS LEFT until exams are taken. Parents this week could be critical to your child's success on their final exams. Take time this week to sit down with them. Talk in detail with them about their classes and how they are preparing for their final exams. Help them devote time each night to studying. There are many things you can do to be an active participant in your child's success. Ask them to explain to you how to read, interpret, set up and solve math problems. Help them review vocabulary by calling out terms and definitions or making flashcards for quick review. Spend time each night going through their study guides for their exams and build their confidence by celebrating the information they have mastered and reviewing the information they are still trying to fully retain. Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard throughout this semester. Your support and your involvement this last week before exams could be the key to their success as we wrap up the first semester.
In an effort to help your child prepare for the EOC exams in Math 1, Math 3, English 2, and Biology we have teachers that are staying after school this week to review with students leading up to the exams. Math 1 will hold review sessions on Monday and Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30. Math 3 will hold a review session on Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30. Biology will hold review sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:15 to 4:30 and English 2 will hold review sessions on Monday and Thursday from 3:15 to 4:30. We are offering this opportunity to all students in these classes. Any students that stay for these review sessions will need transportation home each day. This is a great way to make sure your child has mastered all content and is able to reach their maximum potential on their final exams.
Congratulations to our Christmas Card winners this year. 1st place for drawing was Rhianna Tucker and 1st place for verse was Evalina Marshall. 2nd place for verse was Tristain Hanlsey and 3rd place for verse was Rhianna Tucker. Great job by all our students that submitted a card for consideration.
Our FFA Livestock judging teams participated in the State Competition on December 1, 2021. They judged cattle, sheep, goats, and swine. Our junior team - Justus Meads, Justin Richardson, Miranda Stallings and Lilah Byrum placed 4th in the state! Members of our senior team were Caleb Stallings, Ellie Jackson and MacKenzie Davenport. 173 teams from all across North Carolina participated in this event. Also congratulations to our 2021 baseball team for being selected to serve as the grand marshals for this past weekend's Hertford Christmas parade. Our band and cheerleaders also did an amazing job in the parade spreading Christmas cheer.
We have another busy week this week at PCHS. On Monday our JV girls basketball team will host Lawrence Academy at 4:00 PM. On Tuesday our JV boys, Varsity girls, and Varsity boys will travel to Pasquotank County High School for basketball starting at 4:30 PM. Wednesday will see our swim team back in the pool starting at 4:00 PM in Elizabeth City and our JV boys and Varsity girls and boys will travel to Camden for basketball starting at 4:30 PM. We end the week on Friday with our swim team back in action at 4:00 PM and our basketball teams hosting Edenton. All four basketball teams will play on this night with the JV girls kicking things off at 4:00 PM. Elizabeth City State University will be hosting two virtual information sessions, on December 9th, and December 13th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm to introduce an exciting new scholarship opportunity for future Vikings. If you have any questions about this scholarship opportunity that is worth up to $20,000, please see Mrs. Gray in our guidance department.
As we move into our last week before exams it is important that every student begin to also prepare physically for their exams. Getting plenty of rest each night is key to maximum performance. Use this week to help your child's body renew each night by establishing bed times before 10 PM each night. Help them establish healthy habits each morning by eating breakfast. Also encourage them to stay hydrated. A person that is well rested, hydrated, and working from a healthy diet performs better and is able to focus longer. Use this week to prepare not only mentally with review at home but also physically. We have ten days left, Pirates. Let's finish strong!
