Memories and Milestones
A newsletter for alumni and friends of St. Matthew School
February 2025
Dear Friends of SMS,
The story of our school is one of love and excellence, committed to educating minds and hearts every day. We have much to celebrate in recent months: our JV Girls Basketball team won the Greater Hartford Parochial League Championship, the first championship in eight years; Mrs. Debbie Dombroski was recognized with the distinguished Light of Christ teaching award, the second consecutive year one of our teachers was honored; two of our middle school students earned awards at the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair; we graduated a class of 19 eighth graders who are exceptionally prepared for high school and will forever be bulldogs! On top of all this, our school is experiencing record growth; in fact, we have tripled the number of students in our Pre-Kindergarten program as compared to recent years. More and more families are choosing St. Matthew School and it’s easy to understand why.
You are an important part of our story! As an alumnus, parent, grandparent, volunteer, parishioner, community partner, or friend, your generosity, both in prayer and financially, keeps the spirit of our school thriving. Committed to the ongoing strength of St. Matthew School, we reach out each year asking for your assistance with our annual appeal in support of the exceptional education our school has provided for generations of students. Did you know that tuition only covers about half of the school’s operating expenses? The average tuition for one student is about $5,800/year or $32/day, the lowest tuition for a Catholic School in the area. The goal of our annual fund is to reach beyond the daily expenses of our school to enhance programming for our growing student population and provide students with an exceptional, Catholic education. Last year’s response was most generous and we are hoping to receive $10,000 in donations this year.
We are steadfast in our mission to educate minds and hearts here. St. Matthew School is a beacon of light in our community that is shining brighter each day because of you. Your generous contribution will directly support our students and advance Catholic education at St. Matthew School. Please mail your donation to the school or give online.
Please be assured of our prayers and those of our students daily!
With our most sincere appreciation and warmest regards,
Rev. John Dietrich, Pastor
Dr. Liz Plasky, Principal

Admissions for 2025-2026
We are excited to begin admissions season for the upcoming school year. Interest has been high for all grades, but especially Pre-K3, Pre-K4, and Kindergarten. Families interested in learning more are encouraged to explore our website and give Kate a call for more information and next steps: 860.583.5214 or kricci@smsct.org.
As an aside, we were sorry to learn about the displacement of Bristol Public Pre-Kindergarten students due to the condition of that school. All families are invited to apply for admissions this year or next. While wait lists are likely for next school year, we have just a couple of spots available for 3s and 4s for this year, if interested!
