SD Met Family Updates

On Tuesday, April 16, we hosted our 20th Anniversary Celebration with a variety of terrific speakers, excellent food and music, displays of student work along with student presenters, and the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with all the Yearbooks and T-shirts from the history of the Met. The best part: connecting with old friends, advisors, and classmates!

We were honored to be joined by Elliot Washor, co-founder of Big Picture Learning and the Met, and Richard Barrera from our San Diego Unified Board of Education, who is also a parent of a Met alum.

Our wonderful San Diego Met Foundation sponsored the event, including all the catering. Our partners at Mesa College provided facilities support, including the beautiful meeting space where we opened the event with our speakers.

And the event was planned by our hard-working Met 20th Planning Committee, and supported by staff and student leaders. Thanks to everyone who help make our 20th Anniversary a truly special event!

Our April MetUp tomorrow will focus on Career Exploration. Students will attend panel discussions that are organized by career field, and then meet in small groups with panelists to get a more personal perspective on various careers. In the afternoon, students will engage with our Aspen Challenge Team (see below) on a special art-oriented activity.

Dismissal on Friday, April 19, will be at 2:30pm. Please plan your pickup accordingly.

Patch and Pond’s “Makers Market” event is a student-led initiative to both further our community reach, uplift student entrepreneurship, and provide well-needed funding to continue our aquaponics program for future Met business students. Students from the Met community will be selling their own original creations, including soaps, handmade accessories, and much more. All Met families and the general public are invited support our students and clubs on April 22, from 10AM-2PM, in front of Mesa Commons.

The Aspen Challenge is a nationwide competition in which 40 schools from two cities compete to solve world problems. They are given 5 challenges, and are asked to choose one of them to create a solution for. Our team chose to address the challenge of mental health, which asked us to create a roadmap to support students on their mental health journey. We are creating an art-focused campaign called Express that allows students to create art that displays their mental health journey. Students are encouraged to use artistic creation such as painting, poetry, music, drawing, sculpture, etc. to express their feelings that are too hard to communicate just through drawing. We have our first in-person gallery at the MetUp tomorrow, titled Postmarked Perspectives. Looking for a Mother’s Day gift idea that is truly unique? Join the Met for a Paint Your Pet Fundraiser to benefit the Cat Cafe, one of the Met's most beloved internship sites! The event will be held on Sat, May 11, from 10am to 12pm at the Cat Cafe. Time will be given to participants after the event to visit with the adoptable cats. All pet portraits must be submitted for sketching by April 27 to dpilkington@sandi.net. Please Venmo $50 per participant to @DPilksters to reserve your spot. All proceeds will be donated to the Cat Cafe. So come celebrate your mom and support this awesome event to help the Cat Cafe continue their quest of finding forever homes for their adoptable cats.

Parents: It's time for students to begin registering for summer classes at Mesa! Students who want to take summer classes, note that the deadline to register is Tuesday, April 23. If you want to register for fall, you have until May 14. Students should get support from their Advisor for help selecting classes and completing requisite forms. Students can take up to 6 units for free this summer, which runs from June 3-Aug 10, with some shorter classes.

FBI San Diego is now accepting applications for their 2024 Teen Academy, a free full-day program for rising high school juniors and seniors to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. Students will participate in presentations and hands-on activities covering a variety of law enforcement topics such as terrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students will also hear from special agents, intelligence analysts, language specialists, and professional staff about investigative tactics including gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.

Eligibility: Students must be rising Juniors and Seniors (current Sophomores and Juniors).

The Cleveland National Forest is seeking female students ages 16 – 18 to participate in their inaugural All Girls Camp to inspire girls to pursue careers in wildland firefighting and other exciting and rewarding Forest Service occupations. Participants will learn how to fight fires and manage national resources through a variety of hands-on activities with their fellow camp members. See the attached flyer and details below for more information.
