Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we settle into the rhythm of the new school year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your efforts in helping us start the year off successfully. Your involvement and support have been instrumental in creating an environment where our students can thrive.
At Corona Elementary, our commitment to providing an orderly, safe, and supportive environment remains unwavering. We believe that every child deserves a space where they can learn at high levels, grow with confidence, and explore their full potential. However, creating and maintaining such an environment is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between home and school.
I want to highlight the importance of your cooperation and support when concerns arise. Addressing issues promptly and constructively helps us ensure that our school remains a place where all students can focus on learning. As parents, you play a crucial role in modeling the importance of following rules and respecting the structures in place. When children see this commitment at home, they are more likely to embrace these values at school, setting the stage for their success.
The partnership between home and school is vital. When we work together, aligned in our goals and expectations, our students reap the benefits. They develop the habits of mind and character that will serve them well throughout their academic journey and beyond.
It's important to remember that anything worth having takes hard work, sacrifice, goals, and dedication. Whether it's academic achievement, personal growth, or building a strong, vibrant school community, these principles are key to our success. Together, let’s continue to model these values for our children, showing them that with effort and perseverance, they can achieve great things.
Thank you again for your dedication to our school and for your ongoing partnership. I look forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and shared accomplishments.
With sincere appreciation,
Dr. Sal Flores

September is Attendance Awareness Month
As we begin the new school year, I am excited to share that September is *Attendance Awareness Month* here at Corona Elementary. This month, schools across the nation are focusing on the critical role that regular school attendance plays in your child’s academic success.
Why Attendance Matters
Did you know that students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform better academically and develop the social skills necessary for lifelong success? Even missing just a few days here and there can add up, leading to gaps in learning that can be challenging to overcome.
Here at Corona Elementary, we are committed to ensuring that every student has the best opportunity to succeed. This starts with being present and on time each day. When students attend school consistently, they gain important knowledge, participate in engaging classroom activities, and build strong relationships with their teachers and classmates.
Goals for Attendance Awareness Month
Our goals for Attendance Awareness Month are simple but powerful:
1.Promote Daily Attendance: Encourage students to attend school every day, unless they are ill or there is an emergency. We want every student to understand that their presence is important and valued.
2. Encourage Punctuality: Stress the importance of arriving at school on time. Starting the day together ensures that students are ready to learn and fully participate in all classroom activities.
3. Establish Healthy Routines: Support families in creating strong bedtime and morning routines that help students get enough rest and start the day off right. Good habits at home lead to success in school.
4. Celebrate Success: Recognize and reward students who demonstrate excellent attendance throughout the month. We believe that acknowledging good attendance will motivate all students to strive for regular attendance.
How You Can Support Your Child
As parents and guardians, you play a crucial role in your child’s education. Here are a few ways you can support regular and on-time attendance:
Set a Regular Bedtime: Ensure your child gets enough sleep each night so they are well-rested and ready to learn.
Prepare the Night Before: Help your child pack their backpack and lay out their clothes the night before to make mornings smoother.
Discuss the Importance of Attendance: Talk with your child about why attending school every day is important and how it helps them achieve their goals.
Upcoming Activities and Events
Throughout September, we will have various activities and events to highlight the importance of attendance, including:
Classroom Attendance Challenges: Friendly competitions between classes to see who can achieve the highest attendance rate.
Recognition Assemblies: Celebrating students with perfect attendance at the end of the month.
Parent Workshops: Offering tips on establishing effective routines to support your child’s attendance.
Stay Connected
We will be sharing updates, tips, and reminders throughout the month on our school’s Instagram page and in weekly messages. Be sure to follow us at @corona_omsd and check ParentSquare for the latest information.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. Together, we can make this school year one of growth, learning, and success.
Let’s make every day count!
We received several nominations this year for parent members of our School Site Council (SSC). The SSC is our elected body composed of parents, staff members, teachers, and administrators with the function of aligning strategies to meet our school needs. Understanding Your Student's iReady Diagnostic Results
What is the i-Ready Diagnostic?
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjust its questions for each student. As a student answers correctly, the questions get more difficult. As a student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. This adaptability allows the i-Ready Diagnostic to identify the strengths and opportunities for growth of each student.
Why is my student taking it?
The purpose of the i-Ready Diagnostic is not to give your student a grade, but instead to determine how best to support their learning. It will help your student’s teacher determine their needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the year.
What if my student is performing below grade level?
This situation can happen, and teachers and schools have many strategies and programs to help accelerate your student’s learning. Having this information can help you, your student, and their teachers have the right conversations to make the needed progress.
What can I do to help my student?
- Discuss these results with your student. Celebrate their strengths and progress, and collaborate with them on planning how they will reach their goals.
- Reach out to your student’s teacher to get more ideas and resources to support your student in specific domains and/or skills.
- All Corona students use i-Ready Personalized Instruction and should complete two lessons per week in each subject (English Language-Arts and Math). Review their progress on the student dashboard and support their learning at home with these tips, which can be found here.
Accelerated Reader
Corona Eagles Did It! 43 MILLION WORDS READ! 📖
This year, the bar has been raised yet again and the school goal is to read a total of 45 MILLION WORDS. Students and staff will soon be determining what the end-of-year incentive if we accomplish our goal.
As a reminder this year we are transitioning to Accelerated Reader (AR) as our reading progress platform. Students will read books and take AR quizzes on the books they've read. They earn points by passing the quizzes and earn AR degrees (Associate, Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate) throughout the year based on their grade level and how many points received. After taking the STAR test, students will receive a personalized goal for reading. We are encouraging all students to reach their personalized goals to earn incentives. All students will begin the year working towards receiving their Associate's Degree in Reading during our first AR session. There are also trimester rewards and recognitions for individual readers and classes. Please review the Accelerated Reader chart and contact your child's teacher via ParentSquare if you have any questions.
Eagle Eye on You
This month, we have our Eagle eye on our newest addition to the Eagle family...
Ms. Erika Miller
Kindergarten Teacher
Hello! My name is Erika Miller. I am new to Corona Elementary School and have the privilege of teaching Kindergarten, which is my absolute FAVORITE place to be!
I was born and raised in the little coastal town of Anacortes, Washington. My childhood days were spent playing with my little sister by riding bikes, exploring the woods, building forts and playing at the beach. My mom was diagnosed with Leukemia when I was five years old, so I learned how to be helpful and perseverant at a very young age.
I graduated from Anacortes High School and then earned my AA transfer degree from Skagit Valley College two years later. For the next eight years I worked three jobs to support myself and put myself through college. I graduated from Western Washington University with my Bachelor of Art’s Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I taught Kindergarten in the Mt. Baker School District for five years before my husband’s job moved us to California. Through Cal State Fullerton, I completed my Multiple Subject and Education Specialist Clear Teaching Credentials as well as my Autism Spectrum Endorsement.
This is my 18th year of teaching and 11th year in the Ontario Montclair School District. I’ve taught at Lincoln, El Camino, Elderberry, Online Academy and now here! I’ve taught preschool, TK, Kindergarten and 1st-3rd grades in a variety of capacities (special education and general education, in-person and online). I’ve also had the opportunity to be a TOA (Teacher on Assignment) at El Camino Elementary for the school’s autism program. I am thankful for all of these different experiences in my teaching career, because I value being a life-long learner. Every experience has challenged me to learn more and has given me a valuable perspective as a teacher and human being.
Beyond my teacher title, I am also a wife and mom. My husband, Carson, is Director of Operations for an aerospace manufacturing company in Corona. He enjoys baseball, reading and running ½ Ironman triathlons. We have four wonderful children. Our oldest, Shelby, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Business. She is now 26 and currently in her Doctorate program for Occupational Therapy through Southern California University of Health Sciences. Our son, Shane, just graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Real Estate and Law. He just got a job with Charles Schwab and we moved him to Virginia in June. We are learning how to deal with having our child so far away from home, but we are incredibly proud of him and happy for this opportunity. Our son, Seth, just graduated with high honors from Norco High School where he was an FFA officer and trumpet section leader for the NHS band. Seth is now attending Mt. SAC and continues to play the trumpet in college. Finally, our youngest child is our daughter, Samantha. She just started at Norco Intermediate School which has been an adjustment for her, but she is enjoying it. After going through an extensive application and interview process, she was just chosen to be part of LEAD, which is a leadership program at her school. In her spare time, she loves to dance, play soccer and bug her brother, Seth. As for myself, growing up in the Pacific Northwest gave me a huge appreciation for the outdoors. I love any opportunity to be in the woods or on the water. I also love to read, dance, sing, be silly and spend time with my family and friends!
Our family is a huge fan of baseball, so one of our favorite things to do is plan baseball stadium trips. We fly to a city, rent a car and then road trip to a different ballpark each day (for the most part). We’ve been to Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York (Yankees), Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame), Montreal and Detroit on one trip. The other trip took us to Chicago (White Sox), Milwaukee, Minneapolis, The Field of Dream in Iowa, Kansas City, St. Louis and back to Chicago (Cubs). If you ever get a chance, it’s a great way to bond with your family, see the United States and enjoy lots of baseball!
As a mom of four with three of them now considered adults, I often marvel at how fast the time goes. I feel like my kids were just babies and now, in the blink of an eye, they are grown. Parents, you never get this time back with your kids, so take the time to enjoy it for all it’s worth. It’s one of the hardest jobs you’ll ever do. But the time you put into being a parent, will reward you more than you can ever imagine.
My other piece of advice? Always try your best to be kind. You never know what another person is going through.
Thank you for making me feel welcome at Corona Elementary School. I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of this school family.
