SAFE AND CARING SCHOOLS
GSACRD Voice - Peace and Mental Health
As we enter Nutrition Month this March, it’s a great time to highlight the importance of breakfast for teens. Despite its benefits, over 27% of teens aged 12-19 skip breakfast. Reasons include busy schedules, late nights, and attempts to control weight. However, eating a nutritious breakfast is essential for both physical and mental well-being.
Why Breakfast Matters
Breakfast boosts memory, concentration, and energy, helping teens perform better in school. It also supports healthy metabolism and weight management. Skipping breakfast often leads to unhealthy eating later in the day, putting teens at risk for obesity and other health issues. Additionally, eating breakfast can help improve mood and reduce anxiety, contributing to better mental health throughout the day.
Tips for Healthier Breakfasts
Set an earlier bedtime to ensure enough sleep.
Eat together as a family when possible to set a good example.
Get creative with breakfast—try yogurt with fruit or peanut butter on whole-wheat crackers.
Prepare the night before with easy options like boiled eggs or pre-portioned cereal.
Offer grab-and-go foods like granola bars, yogurt, or fruit.
Check school breakfast programs for additional support.
This Nutrition Month, encourage your teen to start the day with a healthy breakfast. It’s a simple yet effective way to improve their health, school performance, and overall well-being.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Smudging in the Star Spirit Lodge Every Thursday!
Smudging is an Indigenous tradition which involves the burning of sage, sweetgrass, willow, fungus and/or cedar. Smudge produces a distinct odour, but the smoke associated with it is minimal and lasts a very short time. With First Nations and Métis who smudge, sacred plants are burned to cleanse the body, mind, spirit of any bad feelings, negative thoughts, or negative energy- cleansing both physically and spiritually. Smudging allows people to remember, to connect and to be grounded in the present.
Charlene Pannarale from NAIT is available for virtual advising sessions for Grade 11 and 12 students from April until August for students interested in attending the trades college. Click on the link below to book a meeting.

Hypocrites Behind The Mask
Gospel Reading - Luke 6:39-42
8th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C
The word "hypocrite" originates in Greek theatre and it literally means "interpreting from underneath". In this reading, Jesus warns us about interpreting and judging someone else from behind our own mask where we can't see, speak or even breathe clearly.
