Shady Shores Elementary School
August 23, 2024
From Mrs. Bryant
We had a great first full week of school! Thank you to all of the families that joined us for our Kindergarten Teddy Bear Parade this morning. It was wonderful to celebrate our kindergarten students!
Next week our students will begin taking the NWEA MAP Growth assessment. This assessment is designed to provide teachers with a clear picture of what students know and how they are growing academically. Students will take the MAP Growth assessment three times during the school year. Please see below for more information or reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Big Kahuna Fundraiser is Kicking Off on Tuesday, September 3rd!
Our school-wide Big Kahuna Fundraiser kick-off is on Tuesday, September 3rd. Order forms will be coming home soon and will be due on Tuesday, September 23rd. This is our one and only school fundraiser for the year. It helps provide many things for our students on campus, including technology, recess equipment, and fun activities for celebrating their academic successes throughout the year.
Items will be delivered to SSE on Wednesday, October 9, from 1:00-5:00 pm
Did you know?
The Tardy Bell rings each morning at 7:40am. After that all students must be walked into the office by an adult to be checked in for the day. Please do not drop students off in the parking lot, we want to ensure their safety upon entering the building. Every minute matters! We spend time intentionally checking in with students in the morning, and synergizing and focusing as a campus at the beginning of the day during Morning Assembly.

Lake Dallas ISD has some exciting news! During the 2024-2025 school year, all students at Lake Dallas Elementary, Corinth Elementary, and Shady Shores Elementary will receive free breakfast and lunch thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
The CEP allows us to offer meals at no cost to every student, no matter their eligibility for free or reduced lunch. This program is based on a specific percentage of students enrolled in SNAP, TANF or Medicaid, and our schools have met the required 25% ISP to qualify.
DID YOU KNOW that submitting your application for the National School Lunch Program can do MORE than just provide access to free and reduced-price school meals? Qualification under NSLP may also mean you are eligible for:
Pandemic EBT Benefits
Increased School Funding
Reduced Registration fees for AP, SAT, and ACT testing
Discounted rates associated with college applications
Discounted rates on Internet services
We’re confident that this initiative will help ease financial stress for families, boost student attendance, and improve participation in school meals, ultimately supporting our students' well-being and academic success.
UPDATE FROM OUR HEALTH SERVICES
Please note a change in medication administration at LDISD, effective in the 2024-2025 school year:
School districts in Texas are required to follow Texas Education Code, while nursing actions, including those of school nurses, are dictated by the Nursing Practice Act.
If your student needs ANY medication including over-the-counter medications, nursing staff will require a physician, podiatrist, or dentist authorization in order to administer the medication in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing licensing standards. This includes common items, such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc. All prescriptions must be in a prescription bottle with current prescription date and have student name, dosage, and frequency. All other medicines shall be presented in the original container with physician’s order.
This change is due to changes in guidelines from the following:
Nurses must follow the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) in all settings (including schools). NPA 301.002(2)(C) states that nurses may only administer treatments (including medication) with a written order from a physician or other person with prescribing authority in Texas (MD, DO, APRN, PA, podiatrist, dentist).
According to Texas Administrative Code (TAC, 224.11(c)), when there are two competing laws, nurses must follow the most restrictive law that governs their practice, which in this case is the NPA.
Our nurses will need corresponding documentation prior to administering any of the medications named above or other OTC medications. If your doctor does not have the updated medication authorization forms, please reference the links below to provide to your doctor/pediatrician:
