STUDENT HANDBOOK REMINDER
DRESS AND GROOMING
The purpose of a dress code is to provide guidance to students and parents as to appropriate attire for school and at any school function. In addition, the dress code is a primary means of helping students learn a skill, which is required for success in getting and keeping employment linked to attire. As adults we know that there is a difference between dressing for our jobs and dressing for recreation, and therefore having students practice this distinction while attending Cayuse Prairie is a way to promote long-term success. Our guiding principles for the dress code are based on clothing that is appropriate to the environment, does not distract from the learning environment, disrupts school activities, OR creates a safety hazard. Policy #3224
All students to follow:
Undergarments should not be visible at any time.
Shorts allowed from April 1st through November 1st.
No clothing that promotes illegal substances, alcohol, tobacco, violence, sexism, or racism.
No slippers unless it’s deemed “Pajama Day”
No hats in the building unless it’s deemed “Hat Day”
Appropriate seasonal footwear
Middle School students follow:
All rules above
Shirts must have straps of at least 1 inch in width or sleeves. Strapless is not allowed.
Shirts may not be see-through and must cover the stomach (even when arms are raised), chest (including cleavage), under arm and back appropriately.
Pants should not have holes or mesh above mid-thigh and may not be see-through.
It is strongly recommended that shorts, dresses, and skirts be mid-thigh length, but we understand due to clothing trends sometimes it is not possible.
Leggings can be worn with a skirt, shorts, dress or shirt if covered to mid-thigh. Students' backside must be fully covered without having to constantly pull on clothing.
During recess and PE students must be dressed for activity. They must bring a change of clothes if needed to fully participate and stay within the dress code expectations.
PLEASE LABEL OUTSIDE CLOTHING with your student’s name.
A dress policy for students traveling to other schools has also been adopted.
The superintendent, in connection with the sponsor or coach, or other persons in charge of an extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in that activity. Such regulation must be reasonable, substantially related to an important objective of the extracurricular activity, and considerate of the individual financial burden on students.
If the dress code policy is not followed, students will be given alternative clothing to wear.
If the student’s dress or grooming violates the provision of this procedure or policy # 3224, the teacher or superintendent shall request the student to make appropriate corrections. If the student refuses, the superintendent shall notify the parents and request that the parent and the student make the appropriate necessary corrections. If both the student and the parents refuse, the superintendent shall take appropriate action including suspension if circumstances so warrant. Refer to Board policy #3224 for specific information.
