2025 AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. The State of Alaska Department of Education has partnered with NWEA to align and connect the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests with the MAP Growth benchmark assessments students take in fall and winter.
This balanced assessment system targets instruction to better support meeting students’ individual learning needs. In addition, students will take only one assessment per content area (ELA and math) and be provided two scores as follows:
Summative assessment result at grade-level
MAP Growth interim benchmark result, including growth from fall to spring
AK STAR, the Alaska System of Academic Readiness, is comprised of English language arts and mathematics and is administered to students in grades 3-9. The Alaska Science Assessment is administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 10. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at grade level.
Parents can locate resources for AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment, including directions for Student Readiness (Practice Tests and Tutorials), student testing times and general assessment information on the ASD website at https://www.asdk12.org/akstar.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
The ASD AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing window allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility. Students! Get ready to show what you know during our school’s AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing dates:

Student Readiness - AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment
The Student Readiness resources – Student Tutorials, Practice Tests, and Educator Guides to Student Readiness – are available for schools, students, and families. Practice tests are available to anyone with the link, both at school and home, and provide an opportunity to practice both platforms, including using Universal Tools and text-to-speech.
- The Quick Sheet provides links to Practice Tests, Tutorials, Assessment Design, and all readiness resources – please share with families.
- NOTE: All Tutorials for both AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment are housed on Vimeo. Vimeo is not allowed on any ASD device. The State is developing a workaround.
ASD School Calendar Feedback
ASD is in the process of developing future school year calendars. Part of that process is asking for feedback from staff, parents, and the community. Many things go into making the ASD school year calendar, such as test days and holidays. The feedback collected will help guide the calendar committee as they develop future calendars. Please share your feedback on this ASD Calendar Feedback Form.

HG Updates
Lottery Closes March 20th
Just a reminder for our parents thinking of sending their student(s) to Romig for their 6th grade year. Qualified students still need to apply for the Spring Lottery in order to ensure placement into the Gifted Program at Romig. If they do not, they are not guaranteed a space in the program for next year. The lottery closes on March 20, so RPGP parents need to apply for the lottery prior to March 20.

PTA Update
Hello PTA Families,
Thank you so much to our wonderful community for making our Read Across America Breakfast a smashing success! We had so many delicious donations and an amazing crew of volunteers and fed so many students and families that morning! Thank you to all of the parents and Rogers Park staff who joined us. We have a very generous community and we're so grateful for everyone's contributions.
Our next membership meeting will be Thursday, March 27th from 5:30-7:30 in the school library and on Zoom and will include a parent advocacy training courtesy of our VP-Legislative Liaison, Kim Hays. Details to come as the date approaches. Many thanks to those who have responded to calls for advocacy by contacting legislators, signing petitions, attending fundraisers, advocating in Juneau with Great Alaska Schools (we had 5 Rogers Park parents participate!). Your voice makes a difference for our Alaskan students and continues to make Rogers Park a fantastic school!
