September is Attendance Awareness Month
September is National Attendance Awareness Month. Improved school attendance is a priority of the governor and the state of Virginia, as well as an indicator (chronic absenteeism) for state accreditation. We ended the month of August with 95% attendance rate, which is awesome and to be celebrated! We miss our students when they're not here! Education is a partnership between home and school and we want to work together for your child's success! During the month of September, we will share information regarding the importance of attendance. If you need support for your child in this area, please do not hesitate to reach out to our staff, specifically counselors and administration, to help!
Technology Tips - Be a Canvas Observer
Back in the day, it was easier for parents to keep track of student work and assignments. With the use of Chromebooks and Canvas as our learning management system, some parents are not sure how to help. Over the next few weeks, we will feature a Technology Tips section that will provide parents and guardians with strategies to feel more equipped to support their students. Please reach out if you have further questions. Click on the picture to the right to see a guide on how to become an observer in your student's Canvas course.
Sports News
Volleyball
The BGMS volleyball team will host Kate Collins Middle School on Monday, September 16th. The doors will open at 5:00 and admission is $3. The game will start at 5:30. All preK-BGMS 8th graders get in free. High School through adult tickets are $3. Go Gap!
Fans, please park in the front parking lots of both BGMS and BGHS and enter the gym by the glass doors at the end of the building (past the main front entrance). There will be signs to direct you.
BGMS has a “bye” on Wednesday, September 18, and does not play. The next opportunity to see the volleyball team play will be on Monday, September 23rd when BGMS hosts Stewart Middle School.
Cross Country
The BGMS cross-country team will host Riverheads Middle School and Shelburne Middle School on Tuesday, September 17th. Rain is predicted. As long as there isn't thunder and lightning we'll be running. If that changes watch the BGMS website and Remind messages. There is no admission fee. The girls will race at 5:30 and the boy's race will begin around 6 (after all the girls finish). Keep crushing those personal best times and go Gap!!
Basketball
Open gym for BGMS basketball will be on Monday, September 30th from 3:15 - 4:30.
2 additional open dates are planned for Wednesday, October 2nd, and October 9th. More dates will be added when volleyball season comes to a close. Stay tuned for more dates!
All participants must have a completed VHSL physical, permission form (includes all open gym dates), and concussion form. All forms can be found on the BGMS website (choose “menu” then “BGMS Athletics Information”) or from the BGMS office.
**If your child is participating in or tried out for a Fall sport at BGMS you do not need another VHSL physical. ** However, volleyball and cross-country athletes will need to wait to participate in the open basketball gym until their prospective sports are complete. The permission form is linked below.
Please email any questions to the BGMS athletic coordinator, Julie Sanger, jsanger@augusta.k12.va.us. Thank you!
