Can I bring in birthday treats for my child’s birthday?
We celebrate birthdays at Monteith by giving each student a birthday book and bookmark during their birthday month.
Due to the large number of student allergies, we no longer can allow any type of birthday cakes, cupcakes or cookies in the elementary schools (except for teacher scheduled celebrations) . Please save the present celebrations for home parties. If students want to bring in a small goodie bag of non-edible items ( Ex: pop-its, pencils, etc.) that is allowed but not necessary. If you do send in something with your child it needs to be for the whole class not just a couple students.
Kindness matters at Monteith and Always!

Library News
We are having a great time in the library learning about a variety of topics including the difference between fiction vs. non-fiction, the Dewey Decimal System and Digital Citizenship in all grade levels. Each topic and conversation varies based on grade level. Young 5's also discussed the parts of a book. All of these topics had songs and movement to accompany them, so ask your child to perform the fiction vs. non-fiction rap.
"Non-fiction is not fake, like something that actually happened. Fiction is something that's thought up, invented, or imagined."
Digital Citizenship Week is October 14-18. Here are some great resources on Digital Citizenship from Common Sense Media that you may want to incorporate in your routines at home. https://www.commonsense.org/education/family-resources
Also, consider having a device-free dinner just like the Sesame Street crew. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ-RbWAwnx8
Remember to follow the Monteith Library on Instagram to see what we are collaborating on, creating, and exploring!
Art News
Fourth grade students learned about cubism and the artist Pablo Picasso. Students then re-arranged their features in the manner of Cubism in their drawings of a self-portrait. Some of our features might not be where they are supposed to be. We then chose bright colors to color our portraits. We used sharpie to outline our features in the manner in which Picasso used black paint to add emphasis to his portraits.

Music News
Mrs. Bachert's Y5 students explore music at Monteith through singing, movement, listening, and playing instruments. Mrs. Pascoe is excited to make music with our youngest students. We are looking forward to a wonderful year.
