Classroom Updates
Grading Policy for 7th grade
Mid-quarter deadline for assignments is Friday, October 4th. We are encouraging student independence to be aware of due dates throughout the quarter, and this deadline helps scholars focus on a manageable workload.
Please communicate any vacations, illnesses, etc. to the teacher to agree upon another due date if desired.
French Immersion Minnesota Studies - Mme Payia Yang
The French immersion 6th graders started the first unit by learning about TODALSS (Title, Orientation, Date, Author, Source, Scale) and applying them to maps. They are now finishing up their study of Minnesota biomes by doing research and identifying/locating the main biomes in the state on a map.
French Immersion American Studies - Mme Payia Yang
In the first unit, 7th and 8th graders began learning about the foundations of power systems in the United States. This week, students started by closely reading the amendments of the Bill of Rights and applying them to real historical events (such as the Quartering Act of 1765) and past trials (like the Miranda v. Arizona case of 1966).
French 1 - Mme Payia Yang
French 1A students have learned how to recognize common French greetings and goodbyes, identify numbers (0-20), express feelings, and name the weekdays. They will now work with a partner to write a short conversation in French and use some of the vocabulary they have learned as a practice for the quarter summative interpersonal assessment. Each student will receive a handout outlining what they can do and will track their proficiency goals as we progress through the unit (see attachment). If you have any questions, please contact: rachel.payia-yang@spps.org.
French 1B - Mme Payia Yang
Students have reviewed what they learned in Unit 1 (greetings/goodbyes) and have gained an understanding of the importance of French in the Francophonie (French-speaking countries). They will soon review Unit 2, focusing on how to talk about themselves and end the quarter with Unit 3, which covers school life. If you have any questions, please also reach out to rachel.payia-yang@spps.org.
Family-Staff Organization (FSO)
Family-Staff Organization (FSO) - Thanks to the family members and staff who were able to join the first meeting where we shared wonderings and experiences about the school year. FSO presentations are posted to our website after the meeting - you can find them here.
Save the date for our next gathering - "Coffee with the Principal" on Wednesday morning, October 9th. That is also "Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day", so consider biking to school with your student or parking a few blocks away and enjoying a stroll through the neighborhood!

Every Meal
Healthy eating is so important for children. At Hidden River, we work hard to ensure students receive a healthy breakfast and lunch each day to support their developing brains and bodies. Research shows that children who eat regular, nutritious meals are more likely to attend school and be engaged in learning. We are excited to partner with Every Meal to offer a free weekend meal program to all our students.
Every Meal is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to fight child hunger through community and school partnerships.
- Free for all families
- No qualifications required
- Students enrolled in the program will receive a 4-5 pound bag of nutritious, nonperishable food each week
- Every Meal does not collect information from families; privacy is protected
- Families may choose to participate in the program anytime throughout the school year
- Families may choose from a variety of different weekend food bag options
If you are interested in enrolling - please fill out this form. If you have any questions, please contact our School Social Worker at anne.kent@spps.org.
SPPS Calendar Committee Survey
Students in grades 6-12 will also receive this survey in Foundations/Advisory. Families have the right to review the survey and choose not to have your student(s) participate in the survey if you wish. If you do not want your 6-12th grade student to complete this survey, please contact their school(s).
Schools are to collect the opt outs (we expect there will be very few) and should contact the advisory / foundations teachers if parents have chosen to opt out of the survey.
Next week your advisory / foundations lead will get a series of slides with the student calendar survey embedded so that students can understand the task and use advisory / foundations time to complete the survey. The survey for students will be open from 10-7-24 to 10-11-24.
The link below is a PDF of the student survey for your reference or if a parent would like to view the survey prior to a student taking the survey.
