A Note From Mrs. Fragomeni
Families,
On Wednesday students participated in their second to last Birdhouse of the year! This past week, the meeting took a special focus on the beauty of traditions. Students had the opportunity to share their own cherished family customs with each other. Blue Jays then participated in a thinking routine called, See, Think, Wonder. Students viewed three different images of families and children celebrating their traditions; Eid, Holi, and Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos). This routine allows students to foster connections, understanding, curiosity, empathy, and a deep appreciation for other cultures.
Families can continue the connections from Birdhouses by visiting Burton Culture Fest on Wednesday, May 15 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in the Burton Gym. Families can visit booths from Canada, France, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, and Mexico. The Burton Student Diversity Club will also present their learning of other cultures. Several food trucks will be present at the event: Egg Roll Diva, Hoodbachi Grill, Los Dos Amigos, and Rita's Italian Ice.
Thank you families for supporting the Burton initiatives that help cultivate a sense of belonging, understanding, and appreciation within our school community.
Go Blue Jays!

Bike & Roll To School Day
Wednesday, May 8
On May 8th join Burton School in celebrating National Bike and Roll To School Day 2024.
On this day we encourage all Burton kids to ride their bike or scooter to school. Riding a bike or riding a scooter to school has many benefits. It is a great way to get your daily recommended sixty minutes of physical activity, promotes healthy habits and wellness, creates a sense of community, helps with traffic congestion, and reduces pollution.
If you live too far, do not let that deter you. Instead of driving all the way to school, park a few blocks away, pull out your bike or scooter, and ride away. Once you arrive at Burton be sure to stop by the gym doors (tubes) to give Mrs. Grabowski, Burton's PE teacher, a high five, sign our healthy heart school banner, and get a fun sticker.

This day will be full of fun, friends, and physical activity. It will be a time to celebrate the school year while moving our bodies and making memories. Some highlights include the water balloon toss, the obstacle course, the parade of athletes, the pasta relay, a visit from our school mascot, and the BIG shorts race.

May Lunch Menu (Featuring Dominos Pizza)
We are excited to share that students will have a new hot lunch item on Tuesdays...Domino's Pizza. Students who order hot lunch on will receive one piece of Domino's pizza as well as their fruit, vegetable, and milk/juice. At this time, students will not have the option for a second slice of pizza on Tuesdays.
Students are still able to choose from the other daily options: Cool Kids, Chef's Salad, EZ Soy Butter and Jelly, and Chicken Popper Salad.
Due to the high demand and possible long lines, I have reworked the lunch on Tuesday. The new schedule will significantly reduce the line and the wait time for lunch.

Burton Culture Fest Family Night
Planning has begun for the Burton Culture Fest Family Night! This PTA-sponsored family event is an opportunity for our school family to share and learn about other cultures/heritages within the community. We are currently seeking families to host a table on May 15, 2024, from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the Burton gym. We are hoping to have many different countries represented! Grandparents and extended family are encouraged and welcome!
To host a table we ask that you bring:
Items representing your family's cultural or country heritage (photos, local items, art, or books).
Facts you can share with children and families who visit your table.
An experience of music, dancing, storytelling, games, crafts, a skill demonstration, or nut-free candy or small treat.
Burton Spring Clean Up!

Let's keep Burton beautiful! Please join us (Mrs. Fragomeni and Renae Tonge, PTA Landscaping Chair) on Saturday, May 11 from 10:00am - 12:00pm for a spring clean up. We'll be raking leaves, cleaning up the flower beds, and planting flowers to help make Burton shine. Any help is appreciated!

Join the Berkley PTSA Council!
The Berkley PTSA Council will have 3 open positions on the executive board starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Council needs interested persons to reach out by the end of April so we can share nominees with our Council voting members ahead of the vote at the May 28 Council Training Session.
The time commitment for these positions is significantly different than that of a school/unit PTA executive board position. There is 1 meeting per month and a few big events for the year (Caring & Sharing and Founders' Day in the winter and a Training Session in the Spring). Council works to ensure PTA units stay in compliance and follow MI PTA initiatives by offering training, guidance and overall support. It also works to link PTAs to network among one another, as well as leads district wide PTA initiatives.
