PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
4TH GRADE NEWS
Fourth grade is the year that report cards transition from reporting standards-based grades only, to include letter grades as well. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Grades are just one indicator of your child’s progress-- a “snapshot” of where they are at that time. Children learn at different rates. Celebrate hard work and effort rather than “all As”.
On the other hand, maybe this is the time to talk with your child about their effort. Are they filling out their agenda completely every day? Are they asking for help from the teacher when they need it? Are they getting enough sleep at night? Lots of factors, including overscheduling in the evenings, can affect school progress.
So, take a deep breath, don’t panic, and make sure to attend parent-teacher conferences (Oct 28-29), where your child’s teacher will share more detailed information with you.
5TH GRADE NEWS
It has been a busy month in the fifth grade hallway! Fifth graders have wrapped up Unit 1 in math, "Area and Volume." Now they will dive into Unit 2, "Whole Number Place Value and Operations." See if your student can tell you how many square feet of carpet would be needed to cover their bedroom floor. In reading students have just finished their first unit on understanding elements of reading including point of view, theme, author's purpose, and many other things. Ask your student to tell you about different types of genres! In social studies, students are using all the skills they learned in their "Map Skills" unit to make a map of their own island. See if they can tell you what is at zero degrees latitude and zero degrees longitude! Fifth grade scientists have learned what causes seasons, and what causes day and night. Ask them what interesting thing they learned about the number of daylight hours in Nairobi, Kenya! Rough drafts of a personal narrative have been written by fifth grade students. They have revised them to include an interesting lead, dialogue, and specific nouns. They will continue to revise for the next few weeks, then they will have a masterpiece published! Many spelling patterns have been reviewed this month along with those lovely there, their, and they're favorites! Ask your student the difference between a hard g and a soft g. We continue to practice grammar daily through our "Daily Oral Language" folder, and we focused heavily on pronouns. Ask you student the purpose of pronouns. As you can see, it has been a productive month for fifth grade!
