Cook the Book
The new COOK THE BOOK selection is "The Southern Living Community Cookbook" by Sheri Castle. Swing in and select your recipe, then join us for the potluck on Monday, November 4, at 6:00 p.m. This month's cookbook is a celebration of Southern dishes and culture. Hummingbird cake and Ravioli with Tomato Basil Cream Sauce are recent selections! Here's a simple and intriguing recipe that even those new to baking can prepare: Whipping Cream Biscuits, found on page 246. You do not want to miss this one!
We Burn Daylight by Bret Anthony Johnston
This novel is based on the Waco, Texas siege of the Branch Davidian compound which took place 30 years ago. The fictionalized characters, Jaye and Roy, are young teenagers. Roy lives in Waco and is the son of the sheriff. Jaye and her mother live in the compound. Jaye's mother met the leader of the group, the Lamb, in California and followed him to Texas. Jaye is skeptical of the teachings of the Lamb and is fearful that he wants to add her to his flock of chosen young women. Even though she is underage, she is given orders to run errands in the compound's truck. While out, she meets Roy and they become immediate friends. We learn of the conditions in the compound through Jaye's eyes. There are kind people, but also rabid followers of the Lamb's teachings. Roy eventually learns that Jaye and her mother live there and when the siege begins, he fears for her life and makes the decision to try and save her. I found this story to be fascinating and the ending a surprise. I was vaguely aware of the occurrences at Waco, but learned a great deal through this book.
