Kangaroo Chronicles
October 2024
Message from the Principal
Hey Roos,
We had a KANGAMAZING start to the school year, and it is hard to believe the end of the first nine weeks October 10th. Be on the lookout for report cards after we return from the fall break. One of our Kangaroos family values is SUCCESS, and we provide tutoring during Power Hour, and the KHS Homework room is available to students every day during the week before and after school as well as some Saturdays. Take a look at our flyer for more information.
The month of October is full of events. Hispanic Heritage Month will continue these next few weeks, and October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. Relationships is also one of our KHS values, and I’m excited to share with you that we will host one of the best relationship building events for parents/guardians on October 29th and 30th. The event is called Walk a Mile in My Shoes Day. On Walk a Mile in My Shoes Day, you get to join your student at school and attend his/her classes. That’s right – YOU get the opportunity to spend a day with your child to see what it is like for them to be a student at Killeen High School. I have done this event many times, and it is a great way for you to have a deeper understanding of what your student experiences daily. Be on the lookout for more information on our school website, social media, emails, and text messages in the upcoming weeks!
We have a fall break coming up October 14th-18th; however, we will still have campus extra-curricular activities happening during that week. I want to wish all our students and staff the best as they continue to work hard during that week and compete. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. Let's go BIG ROOS!
Hugs,
Kara Trevino
Kara Lawson: Handle Hard Better
“If you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it’s never going to happen,” she said. “What happens is you handle hard better."
Win the drill, not the season – think short term goals (weekly)
Find one voice of positive reinforcement - If we’re not hearing anything encouraging, the hardship becomes even tougher.
Short-term failure is not defeat - No matter how hard we try or how badly we want it, we will fail on occasion. But knowing in the back of our minds that failure isn’t fatal or a horrible indictment of our talent is a means of maintaining perspective to get through it. In essence, getting knocked down is inevitable. Quickly getting back up is a choice.
UPDATED KISD Football Expectations
Our athletic events, specifically football games, are a time to celebrate the talent and hard work of our student-athletes, athletic trainers, cheerleaders, band and drill team members. Along with their coaches and teachers, these students put in countless hours to share their passion with our community on Thursday and Friday nights.
The focus of our athletic events should remain on these students and not disruptions by spectators.
Therefore, due to recent inappropriate and unsafe behavior at football games, KISD is implementing immediate changes to our game day policies at Leo Buckley and Joseph L. Searles III Stadiums.
Please take note of these new expectations that will be enforced beginning Friday, September 20, 2024:
· All KISD secondary students must have their student ID for entry into football games unless accompanied by an adult chaperone. The student ID must be worn and visible while the student is on district property.
· All KISD secondary students not accompanied by an adult chaperone will enter the stadium through a designated student gate. The student ID must be worn and visible at all times.
· Students from non-participating schools must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
· On the home side: Only KISD students may sit in the student section. Students may only sit in the general admission section if accompanied by an adult chaperone.
· Throughout the event, KISD students must remain in the student section unless they are using the restroom or in line for concessions. The number of students allowed in the concession line will be limited to help with crowd control. After finishing in the restroom or concessions, students must return immediately to the student section.
· Any student not complying with these expectations or any directive from district administrators will be escorted out of the game.
Our clear bag policy remains in effect. Additionally, metal detectors and wands may be used at entrances.
The safety of our students, staff and community at district events, including football games, is a top priority for us. Inappropriate and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.
Our students and community deserve a great game day experience, and we appreciate your continued support to help make this happen.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jo Ann Fey
Superintendent

By reducing cellphone-related disruptions, we create a safer, more focused, and supportive educational atmosphere for everyone.
Secondary campuses will begin issuing pouches, training students on expectations and implementing procedures beginning on August 14. Consequences for not meeting expectations will begin on September 3. Parents/guardians can submit questions via email: phonefreeschools@killeenisd.org.
