Te Aroha Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) Teacher Only Day Thursday 28th April
We are excited that the Te Aroha Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) will be meeting together for the first time in 2024, next Thursday. This year we welcome back Te Aroha Primary into our Community of Learning.
The major focus of the Teacher Only Day will centre around trauma informed teaching practice. Our keynote speaker for the day is Jason Williams, who additionally will spend time working with each Te Aroha School throughout Terms 2 and 3.
Jason Williams has been a Principal, and a Winner of the 2021 Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards, Wellbeing category. Jase is a certified trainer in the Neurosequential Model in Education (facilitated by Dr. Bruce Perry – regarded as the world’s leading childhood trauma expert). The only Māori male certified trainer in the Neurosequential Model in Education in the entire world, Jase facilitates monthly ‘Men’s and Women’s Hui’ as a place of healing for whānau in the community that is focused on mental health and wellbeing from a ‘keeping it real’ perspective and grounded in neuroscience.

Camp Epworth reflection
Camp Epworth, in Week 6 of Term 1, was incredible.
Day one, we started with a walk along Lake Karapiro, timing the weather perfectly before the rain set in. When we arrived at camp we toured around Camp Epworth, set up our bunk rooms and did activities in the hall. That night, the weather was too wet for the campfire we had planned to do, so we had a 'Tug of War' tournament. To the parents' disappointment, the children were the victors!
Day two we jumped into our first four activities. The groups rotated around with different parents running different activities around camp. The activities were:
Raft building where teams had to create a floating raft with rope, planks of wood and rubber tubes.
Kayaking where teams learned different kayaking skills.
Art and Camera, where a group went around and took photos of other groups doing their activities and then drew pictures from them.
Ziplining, where students jumped off a ledge on the Zipline one at a time.
St Johns, where students learned CPR and other life saving skills.
Sports, where the children played a variety of sports including Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Touch Rugby.
Camp cooking, where students cooked damper and marshmallows over an open fire.
Archery, where children learned to shoot with a bow and arrow to hit a target.
That evening we played top team activities, and finished the evening with a game of spotlight.
Day three we completed the last four rotations of activities. The evening involved a range of skits. Students did acting, dancing and comedy. The teachers and parents even performed a song. There was a final game of spotlight to conclude our last night at camp.
On our final day, after packing up, the waterslide was opened up and students had a great time going down it. Sports were played on the field and students played outdoor games such as the giant chess and checkers.
We returned to school after lunch, exhausted but thrilled after an amazing time at camp.

My Biggest Challenge - By Amul
CPR. The most challenging thing at camp. We were doing the St John Rotation, our group’s 5th rotation. We learnt how to do these procedures for when someone is unconscious from Alisia, a former St John worker. Then we had to do it to our partner, just like Alisha showed us how when she did it to Ruby…But back to the actual story.
We got to do CPR on the dummies, like Alisia showed us. We first did CPR to the dummies by listening to songs, and switching over with our buddy as well. It wasn’t as easy as I saw in the videos! We basically had to push the chest and the heart at the same time, which is unbelievably hard, because of how hard the bones are in the body, so I had to basically use all my muscles in doing that, unlike some people. When that got done, we got into this CPR competition where we had to do CPR to the lullaby “ Row, row, row your boat”. During one of the hard CPR round’s, I accidentally breathed into the dummy's mouth, which you are not supposed to do so for punishment, I had to clean the dummy's mouth, and the face. In actual fact, I actually did not mind at all!
Archery - By Nate
Thwip - I just let my arrow go at archery. I hear the arrow hit. I just hit the bullseye! I look and a massive smile shoots up the sides of my face. I am now second place out of all the groups beating Seb by a smidge but I forget the string comes back. Smack - the string whips me across my arm. I don't really care though. I get told to grab my arrow. I wait at my arrow for Whaea Adreena to take a photo. I get my round again. I go back. My next turn I hit the white. I thought my luck was gone but after three turns, I hit the red but that was the last turn so we had to put all the bows and arrows away.
Kayaking - By Huia
My arms and legs had a different level of irritation when I was pushing through the water in my kayak.
I couldn't help noticing that the clouds were getting closer. A few minutes later we were in the middle of a game when suddenly the enormous mysterious clouds started pouring down with rain. The rain was freezing cold. My clothes were soaked. We were about to go back to shore. When suddenly the rain stopped.
We got to enjoy the rest of the time we had left and had an amazing time.
Te Aroha District Swimming Results 2024
After our School Swimming Sports in Week 5, Mrs Meyler accompanied our Districts Swim team along to the Te Aroha College pool last Monday to compete against the other schools in the Te Aroha District. These wonderful athletes gave it their best and came away with some amazing results …and croaky voices, after chanting and supporting their team all day!
Thank you to the ever present awesome parent helpers and supporters on the day.

Hockey Fun Day - Ngatea - 2024
Last Thursday, 90 of our students travelled to Ngatea to take part in Hockey Fun Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for our budding Black Sticks to 'Give Hockey a go', learn new skills, and for some, experience working as a team on the sports field for the first time. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff and to the many parents/caregivers that went along as managers, provided transport and supported our team. As always we appreciate you all and say a big THANK YOU. These opportunities are not possible without your help.
Hockey Fun Day was FUN!!!!
Japanese students visit
Teams Tui and Ruru were lucky enough to have a taste of Japanese Culture on Wednesday, as 30 exchange students came to visit our school.
The Japanese students are part of the International Programme at Te Aroha College. Our visitors taught us how to make origami shapes and shared some of their language - both verbal and visual. A fantastic experience for all.
